transfer speeds on new hard drive

I do have a valid copy of Windows 7. I was asking what do I need to do to the 250gb drive since I am going to quit using it. Do I just format it and do nothing else, then install Windows on the 500gb?

I can't install the same Windows on two different hard drives, right?

I never had a issue with it personally worst case you have to call MS but I never had it happen and I usually install Windows on 4 PCs.

Are you saying that you use install the same Windows on 4 different drives that are being used? I'm sorry if I read your post wrong.

Just curious you using the copy to or the move to .. ??

I have two 500gb black as well i would test mine and see what my speeds are compared to yours if i know what your doing ..

Around Evansville ... 20 minutes from henderson KY

yeah it did not seem to make a difference either of the two i tried took 1min for 8 gb file though..

When you start copying a file, a box should pop up telling you what you are copying, how much time is left, a progress bar, and where you are copying it to. Might need to click more details to make it show the speed.

Kinda odd....you guys using the same model? I drag and drop my files.

BTW yes 4 installs from 1 Windows Disc. Sadly I don't care what MS has to say for what they charge I want it on all my PCs :P

*edit*
I just did it your way and I only achieved 27mb transfer rates vs 50mb+ so maybe this is your issue. Try dragging and dropping the files (it doesn't move them and still copies them)

I normally drag and drop as well which usually copies the files.

How the heck do you have the same Windows installed on 4 different computers at once?

Dunno...but I have never had a issue doing it from XP/Vista/7 then again though I get free OEM discs from a buddy who owns a computer shop in Indiana he sends me a OS disc when he has spares as I help him out other things so maybe it has multiple installs on it.

Aren't you just so special:P

I am curious to know if it does have multiple installs. Because I figured you would have trouble activating Windows with a single install disk.

Just curious, where is this shop located at?

Fort Wayne a little local shop he does repairs/sells systems and its a family owned kinda thing. I ended up helping his sister too but in other areas for a few years that we wont discuss :P

Though we were friends for 6-7 years so he hooks me up with spare copies of operating systems when they come out as he knows I would still be on XP if he didn't :P Sadly no OS is worth more then $100 imo.

Yeah, I agree with you. Especially when they come out with a new one every 3 years. And since Windows is the most popular, they could still make a fortune selling them for $50.

Back to the original problem, I just tried to copy a file in safe mode and it did the same thing.

On a side note, I find this kind of strange. When I right click on a file or folder and go to send to option, the second drive is not listed. The only drives I can send it to is the floppy drive and the dvd drive. IIRC, it has never been an option in XP, Vista or 7, at least not for me anyways.

I have both 500gb drives hooked up as internals. The speeds are still slow. When it firsts starts copying, the speed is around 180mb's for a split second then starts dropping rapidly.

I think all my problems here lately are related to the MOBO. I am going to take it somebody I know and have them install a different MOBO and see if that fixes any problems.

I will let you know how it turns out.

Well mine is doing the same thing with my WD500gb black hdd's with an AMD setup so I would suspect the OS before the MB.

I tried it with xp but it does not give the transfer rate so I am not sure if it is till dropping or not.. ??? Is there another way on testing..?
