Purchasing new heatsink

I'm about to replace my mobo/processor some time in the near future, and I've been looking around for good heatsinks for around $30. I have no experience in this department, so I figured I'd ask you guys.

If it matters, the mobo im getting will have an am3 processor in it.

I'm currently looking at:

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212

and ARTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro

suggestions?

Both your links are broken. :o

But, for the price this simply can't be beaten, at all.

It's a great cooler, and performs especially well on the AM2/AM2+/AM3 platform compared to other platforms for some reason (I'm sure it has a great AMD mounting system, which would explain things).

It's quite a large cooler, though. It should fit in any decently sized case, and on any motherboard, unless you have RAM with ridiculously tall heatspreaders.

Note: If you have it installed in most cases, you won't be able to utilise the case's side fan option; the heatsink will most likely interfere. I know it does with things like the CoolerMaster CM690 and Antec 300/900/1200.

I hope I just fixed both links...

and that cooler looks good, I don't know what i think about not being able to use the side fan though.

The cooler's more than good. ;)

It's a fair bit better than both the coolers you linked, anyway.

The use of a side fan in a case is actually somewhat useless, for CPU temps anyway. It can help if you're using a lot of graphics cards, and you've got a lot of fans in there, but other than that, it's useless. It disturbs the natural Front --> Back airflow of your case, and can actually harm temperatures.

Get the Mugen 2 - you won't be disappointed. :)

I don't see AM3 as a compatibility option for it.

The Hyper 212+ gets my vote because it actually beat a ThermalRight True (unlapped, obviously) in a test. Also, it's a cheap looking heatsink, but you can get two fans on it.

+1 for scythe mugen; was considering getting one (for this system, an AM3 system, it works on it), beacuse, as meticadpa said, of the amazing price:performance ratio, but getting a xigmatek S1283 for a tenner was quite a bit better tbh :P

That's an awesome price.

I paid like £30 shipped for my TRUE, with a 120mm Sunon Denki fan... not bad. :)

Im sorry, but the price of the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus is low, and its performance is amazing

im getting better results that guys using 9700's, V8's, TRUE, and a few others

HardwareCanucks rates it as one of the best coolers, but loses out to the Prolimatech on very high heat applications (OC'ed Core i7 extreme at max voltage)

You wont be sorry you bought the HYper...

Just make sure you put thermal paste on right, cause its Heatpipe Direct...

The problem with many reviews of cooling hardware is: How much of it is just a result of inconsistent mounting of different heatsinks/waterblocks? If there was some way to determine that the heatsink has been mounted 100% effectively, then they'd be a much more valuable source.

For example, that review has a Xigmatek S1283 beating a Megahalems at stock speeds on the i7... no matter the heatload, the Megahalems would reign superior, assuming the same ambient temperature, etc. So, I can only really conclude that they didn't have a 100% effective mount on the Megahalems.

well, then, put it this way

its 27 degrees here, and my CPU is at 35 idle, 44 load.

thats 8 (idle) and 17 (load) above ambient...

so there you go...

trust me, its a brilliant cooler for the price. I was seriously surprised...

Im gonna take it to my i5 build, and if it copes, ill keep it, if it doesnt, ill get a Prolimatech or Thermalright Venomous...
