4850 stops responding

every now and then my computer screen will freeze and then go blank for a couple of seconds and then when it starts up again i get a little message from the bottom right hand corner of the screen (where all the windows messages appear) saying that my 4850 has stopped responding but has now recovered.

this is more of an annoyance than anything life threatening, but either way i still would like some help of fixing this issue. :)

i'm not 100% certain when it started but it may have been since i started folding on my gpu or maybe when i was trying to get Aero working (windows 7 aero for some unknown reason won't work)
to try getting aero to work i downloaded drivercleaner Pro to clear all of my ATI drivers si then i could reinstall them hoping that would solve the aero problem.

but that didn't go according to plan because after clearing them and then trying to update them i get a message saying my drivers are all up to date... but i just cleared them all... got me stumped.

and for some reason when i try to fold on my gpu i will never get through a whole work unit because of this. (it got it from the status log)

so i'm am wondering if either of those things are causing my gpu to stop responding, however i am not 100% these are what are causing the problem.

The only time I have ever had this problem with my 4850 is when I over clocked it to high. Do you haven't yours OCed at all? You don't need to remove the old drivers to install new ones. Unless you already have the newest driver and you just want to reinstall it. I don't know anything about folding really, but maybe F@H is pushing you're card to hard.
 
i have had similar problems with my hd 5770 but when i researched it, i found that it was likely caused by the ultra low "idle" clock settings. for some reason when the clock speeds are too low the driver quits working (again, this is just what i read). there is some way to find the file that has the idle settings and change it but i am not sure what the file is or where it is (if you want to know more, just google the pop-up message text). hope i helped.

and no i haven't ever overclocked it. :(
 
The radeon 4000 series dont underclock themselves. they don't need to either, my 4850 (which is now in RMA) ran at 36c idle, so no need for udnerclockign there.

Yes, they do. But their underclocks are much higher than the 5k series. They underclock the core to 500mhz and the ram usually stays high. The issue here is that he's got a card that's dying.

i had my cpu running back at 2 cores for a little and it still happened then, it only tends to happen every once in a while, occasionally at start up and it happened once when i was folding on the gpu and just started running prime 95

Are you sure that the 4000 cards underclock themselves? mine never did. always at 625mhz. then again mine was faulty...
 
ok, well i set the bios back to default and after leaving it on all day (idle) and playing some dawn of war 2 i got a blue screen. i played dawn of war for about an hour and a half and then i got a bsod. luckily i had just saved! :)
i'm not entirely sure what the bsod code was because i didn't have time to write it down. :(
but i guess it must be my gpu.

what do i do now?
 
Well to stop the restart on the BSOD go to start - right click computer - properties - advanced system settings - advanced tab - Start up and Recover Settings - and uncheck "Automatically Restart"
This will stop the BSOD and will only reboot when you want it too.

This should be the same for Vista and Windows 7. With XP its pretty much the same but you can skip the advanced system settings part. I dunno what idiot thought it was a good idea to leave that error message enabled by default :P



I would also download DriverSweeper from 3dGuru and remove all your ATI drivers and catalyst and then run DriveSweeper then reinstall the newest versions of both. (do this in safe mode for the DriveSweeper removal)
 
so remove every driver that has anything to do with ATI? or just the drivers that show up as "ATI" because with drivercleaner pro i was told to only clear the "ATI" section and nothing else that had "ATI" in it.

thanks fror the help, i will change the settings to get rid of the bsod now :)

i'm going on holidays today so i may not reply for a while.

If your cards under warranty like mine is just contact the manufacturer or wherever you bought it from and have it replaced.
 
just got another blue screen after playing dawn of war 2 for a couple of hours.

here is the error:

looks like i may have to give asus a call
