5850 or wait for 5870 using 8400gs

I have been jacked lol. Anyway was thinking the same thing, why get a 5850 and OC when I can afford a 5870 and OC that. That is like the old "if I put a $3000 turbo kit on my civic I will spank your mullet mobile camaro" "but if I put a $3000 turbo kit on my mullet car then what happens to your arguement?"

Yeah but what about if you overclock the 5870?
Not quite, because with the 5870 you are going to need more cooling which will cost more(eg- say you go liquid, a waterblock is $99 for just a cheap one), more power, and generally dont overclock the same percentage that a 5850 will.

I didnt know you had to have liquid cooling for that. So what's the highest you can go on air? I never overclocked mine before but just want to know for future use.

This is from someone who actually has the card, me. I have the asus 5850 and if you notice asus makes the 5850 with a voltage tweak. This means without goin against the warrenty you can push the voltage higher and get incredible performance without it heating up. With the voltage tweak and overclocking you can overclock the 5850 higher than the overclocked 5870. This os for 100$ cheaper and it cones with dirt 2, which the 5870 does as well.

Trust me the asus 5850 can be pushed way beyond the 5870. Also, it's the only 5850 sold out on newegg. I wonder why hmm.

Just trying to help, I was in your same situation, save the 100$ for something else, a new heatsink, keyboard or something.

WHAT BLOODY RESOLUTION ARE YOU PLAYING? WHAT PSU?

All of this talk is worth nothing if he is playing on a 17" monitor. WASTE OF MONEY. A second hand 9600GT will give the same experience bar DX11.

Maybe you should re-read through the post before jumping at people as the OP has answered both of those questions.

Ha ha your right about the hole burning. I guess I will have to wait and see how the one performs. I have only ever touched computers with onboard graphics and my 8400gs. Who knows I may feel content with just one. Also wont the 5970 "slow down" to the 5870 if they are crossfired?

Someone asked what resolution I game at and thats a good question. Furmark and my display settings say 1360x768. However I am using a samsung 42" 1080p tv for a monitor. I thought that meant I would be using 1920x1080. Guess not. And the PSU is a corsair 850.
...

At that resolution a 5670 would be adequate. a 5770 would give better performance (i only have a 17" 1280x1024 screen, but hey a 5770 is worth it for future proofing, if i ever want a better monitor)
