just wondering if its a good idea to remove the side panel of my desktop and turn down the fans so that its quieter. I figure all the fans are doing is pushing air into the case so why not just lower the speed of the fans and just keep the case open.

I've heard mixed reviews about this. Some people say doing so creates hot spots on the motherboard. Also sometimes cooling performance may not be quite as good since the air doesn't flow through the case. You could also get quite a bit more dust and other junk inside your case...

Taking off the side panel will also allow a direct path for the sound of the fans to travel to your ear. It'll also disallow any type of wind tunnel affect to happen in the case, which creates hot spots. If you want a quieter computer you should purchase better fans.
