Disk Defragmenting

Hello again,

When I do a defrag, it shows the blue, white and red files spread all over the place. When i used to defrag, it would take about 30 minutes and pretty tightly "bunch" everything up. Now it doesn't seem to bring everything together. I defraged and it took about 20 minutes and changed the before and after very little. i then did another defrag that took about 2 minutes to complete. Then several more that took about 30 seconds each. Still, very little tighteneing of the files.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

If you are running XP, you will not get it to the point that everything is close together like it was in 98 and ME. And there is no need to defragment XP so often unless you install and uninstall a lot of programs. Usually I defragment about once every 6 months or so.

Hi, though defragmenting is good for computer, you should not do that frequently, and I would like to tell you something more about defragmentation.

Before defragmenting disk, you should do something in advance.

1. You should clean up the junk files and information.

Since your system work for a long time, the junk files may cram many unconscious operations may result in junk files. They are temporary files when installing the programs, cache files after browsing, DLL files left by deleting software and error files produced by shutting down the computer forcedly.

It is common that most users are inclined to use the disk cleaning up programs in the Windows, at the same time, you can also turn to certain more powerful defragmenter to help you.

2. You should check and restore any mistake in the hard disk.

Of course, you can have a try of the Disk Scan Program of Windows firstly. Although it really takes a lot of time to repair it, as long as you are patient enough, the most errors and mistakes can be restored after complete and detailed scanning.
