First Build Help

Hello all,
I'm a techie new to the whole building aspect of a computer. I was wondering what if you could help me out with the parts I've selected. My budget is $700 and I intend to use this PC for school, basic workstation functions, and mild gaming and graphics acceleration. I was wondering if I could get a double check on compatibility issues, suggestions, and comments. Since I'm new to this, I could use all of the help I can get! Thanks! I also think that you should know, I need the motherboard with firewire, and a graphics card with VGA/D-Sub.

Here's the link:

All of this and shipping totals to $646.97

Thanks,

Just skimming over it, I only see a couple things I'd change...

The video card is quite weak. It'd be fine for a work-station card, but you may consider something newer with the latest shader/directx/etc support. Most cards come with at least one DVI to VGA converter.

RAM is fine, but you could probably step down to a slightly lower speed with little to no noticable decrease in performance.

I'd go with a PCI Wifi card rather than USB. I find USB cards of that sort can be glitchy at times.

Case is fine, but you could save a few bucks on a cheaper one. I use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119068 . It's a nice case that's not too expensive. I just don't trust the screwless design for the cards.

I would also maybe save a bit of money getting a different motherboard, dont think you will be needing crossfire

Can you recommend a video card, and a wi-fi card? I was also wondering if there were any compatibility issues that I missed, or do I not have enough space one the motherboard for everything? I'm sorry to ask a lot, but being new to this I need all the help and tips I can get.

As far as the case goes, I think the price is fine considering a need something with a little more space than that one, and for the RAM i just feel better inside knowing I have that much for my several testing moments.

Thanks.

its allows two ati graphics cards to be connected up to improve graphics performance. Nvidia cards can connect up aswell, but that called SLI

Unless you are going to put in other stuff in your computer other than what is on that list, you have the space

here you go, this is a better motherboard for you, though the same price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128397&Tpk=GA-MA785GMT-UD2H and heres some better DDR3 memory to go with it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260&cm_re=ddr3-_-20-145-260-_-Product Also this graphics card is the 9600gt, a HELL of a lot better than the 9500gt, for 1 dollar extra http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4125272R&cm_re=9600gt-_-14-125-272R-_-Product
Here, I added the parts you suggested and some other parts recommended by other people. I came out a little more expensive by I think its worth it. Let me know if I did anything wrong compatibility wise. Thanks.

That's a nice case for the money, but I like the other one better because I'll be able to put five fans in it for the occasional overclock.

o i assumed that you were not going to OC. If you want to OC having load more fans aint going to make much of a difference as long as you have two big fans, one front bottom and one back top (plus PSU), better to have negative pressure. What you need is an aftermarket heatsink.

Ok, I over exaggerated a little on the OC thing, but the five fans thing is pretty sweet, and that other case was said to have flimsy parts while this one got a better rating. Anyways, thanks for all your help. I appreciate it that some people out there are willing to help.

You can but artic silver, its one of the best, but you dont need to as the heatsink will come with its own thermal paste. You will need to apply it, type in "applying thermal paste" in youtube, dont worry its easy to do.
