I am attempting to connect an xbox Hard drive to a laptop running vista via external hard drive casing. The laptop reconizes the drive but is not accessable. I would like to reformat it any ideas?

right click my computer and choose manage.... go to disk manager... find your drive right click and should give you a format option... just make sure its your xbox hdd and not something important.

Use magic disk. it will even show hidden partitions. but get the one which you can boot from from a cd or Floppy. Because the computer may be using it.

Tried this it is unexplainable. Neither suggestion is useful. Cant wipe it if the computer recognizes it but wont acknowledge it.

was there something wrong with the drive? what file format is it in?

It's in xbox format lol I tore out the hdd of an xbox and hooked it up. I tried starting up the hdd as primary and the computer skipped it. Any way to reformat in bios? Didn't see anything but the computer knew it was there in bios I can't find a trace of it in windows except in remove hardwear safely menu.

well i didnt know since it was microsoft they used a windows/micrsoft file format for the drive like ntfs or fat.

you could try downloading a dos boot disk and doing an fdisk wipe the partitions out and then format it that way... it will be in fat32 but at least you will be able to see it in windows and make it NTFS. or you could download something called ultimate boot cd and there is a bunch of hard disk tools on that you can probably get this job done with. i would hook the drive directly to your computer though... no usb. for both of these options.
