I just wanted to write a little bit here for anyone who's considering upgrading to Windows 7. I have an HP Pavillion a749c which got an index rating of a mighty 2.0 lol. Not good. But I urge anyone who can make the transition to do so because of the overall benefits. I'm not sure why, and I'm sure someone could explain why, but I ran a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net and came up with the following:
WinXP
1.05Mbps D/L and .93 Mbps U/L
Windows 7 on same machine after fresh install
11.15Mbps D/L and 1.04 Mbps U/L
Maybe this is just an example of a bad WinXP setup, but I truly have always experienced better speeds on Win7 on all the boxes I've worked on. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same dramatic speed differences and maybe an explanation of it. I understand that there were some TCP limitations on XP and that some of that was changes in Vista and even in Win7 but I don't know enough about that to attribute it all. Now I'm going to change my wireless hardware out from a Netgear USB-N Adapter to a Netgear PCI-N adapter and see if there are any further increases. I'll post my results after I complete the install.
