35 Gb lost somewhere?

Hi.
My hard drive says that i'm using 98 Gb but when I ran a analyzer on all my files it says that i'm only using 62 Gb.
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista so i figure it has something to do with that.

I have a hard drive on 320 Gb of which I can use 288.
Is it Windows 7 that takes so much space? I didn't think it would take that much space.

No, that's normal...

Windows thinks that 1GB = 1024MB whereas the hard drive manufacturers call 1GB 1000MB, so the two are not exact.

So you always lose some space.

It's normal if the Hard Drive started out in life as 320GB

Because Hard Drive manufacturers talk in 1000 bytes = 1KB and computers work in 1024 bytes = 1KB. By the time you get to 320GB the usable space is only 298GB before you have started.

It is the same with all Hard Discs, what you buy is not the actual space that you have available.
