i am looking to buy a new phenomII x4 and need a new heatsink. i want to oc to highest settings (without crash). newegg has a really bad selection. i have heard other recommend places to buy cooling equipment but i cannot remember what the places were. any good ones out there?

really? when i go into the compatibility options tab and find the different ones that include am3 i only get 12. when i search for "am3" i get 36 though. what is up with that? so are those heatsinks any good? any better ones out there that someone recommends?

am2 am2+ and am3 all have the same mounting bracket

HA, really? i feel like a total n00b. so would i be fine getting any am2, am2+, or am3 heatsink? i am assuming then that they would ALL fit on my am2/am2+ motherboard too, right? also, why do manufacturers label some as only fitting certain ones? is that just because the other ones weren't around yet (ex. am3 not listed with am2/am2+)?

they were probably manufatured before am3 was out.

wow, that is just great. i thought i had my choices narrowed down but now i have a lot more... any recommendations on the best bang-for-buck heatsinks that also look great? again, going for quad at 3.0+ ghz (hopefully around 3.5 or so, maybe higher).

definitely no more than 100. i don't have too much bread. but i want to be able to oc and not feel worried at all.

ok, i will consider it. too bad it doesn't come with any fan though. would've been a bonus. thanks to all who answered.

you should try to get the corsair h50. its a closed loop water cooler. they sell it at bestbuy for $64 out the door, and i must say its a great deal for a great cooler. its compatible with all intel and your amd socket, which has a bracket with screws so theres no push pin crap for securing it. i got one for my q6600. its overclocked from a stock fsb of 1066Mhz to 1600Mhz, and a stock core clock of 2.4Ghz to
3.2Ghz. at idle it runs 30c, and using prime or intel burn test at 100% load for over an hour, it doesnt exceed 50c. when playing games like dirt 2, crysis, timeshift...it never exceeds 45c. i highly recommend this cooler, plus its in a store that if something is wrong with it, you can take it back instead of dealing with rma and waiting for the ups
