Hi,
i have a big problem with my memory.
i had 20gb free memory on my c: drive. today i checked and i had 9.6 a few hours ago.. i checked again now and i have 7.5 :S
i didnt install any program and i didnt dowload anything.
i just watched TVU Player for a few hours.. but i do that all the time so i dont think its that.
can someone please help me with this?
because its serious.. at first i thought id transferred about 10gb of files and id forgotten.. but now after loosing another 2 gigs its really worrying me.
id appreciate some help.
thank u.

Have you tried rebooting since then? It could be the cache or something.

If not, do a disk cleanup as it could be temporary files.

CCleaner is a free program that does pretty well getting rid of temp files and such. Try running that. If you continue to have problems, you could try something like Windows scandisk or CHKDSK. If you have damaged files they can usually repair them

You may be infected if your are loosing hard drive space. Try runing some malware scans using Malwarebytes.

Thanks for all the replies.
i have mc afee installed on my laptop. so theres no viruses.. i did a full scan and nothing....
i used a cleaner program to delete the temp files and all that stuff..
i used a registry cleaner to clean the registry.
nothing seems to be working.
now i just turn it off and removed the battery and ill try again tonight.
if anyone has any other solution for this problem please share :)

Just because you have Mcafee installed and ran a scan doesn't mean you aren't infected. A virus scanner won't catch most of today's infections. You must use a malware scanner such as Malwarebytes, Superantispyware or something similar.

OMG!
im about to cry!
i got home, put the battery in and turned on the laptop, and ive lost more storage...
so i did a desperate move and did a system restore to last week and i just ended up losing more memory.
before starting to write this post i was at 6.66 gb and now im at 6.64 gb
im gonna try Malwarebytes right away.
this is the weirdest thing that has EVER happened!!!

it didnt work!
i tried everything..
i deleted many files so the memory went up to like 13gb.. but it keeps on going back down...
during the malwarebytes scan it was more or less stable...
but it started going on soon after... (the full scan took smtn like 4 hours)

is there anything else i can be doing?

i just dont understand how this is possible...
how can i lose memory without adding anything to my drive..
i just hope theres a solution so i wont have to format! :(

i just thought of smtn...
is it possible that this problem is caused by a hardware malfunction??
i mean if my laptop is getting old and cranky, is it possible that it just starts losing memory?

Post a hijackthis log.

Hello, please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I was actually gonna suggest that next but that seems too weird for system restore to be acting that way. It must have been creating restore points a few times a day then for it to go that quick.

Are you using XP? Not sure if you can do it in vista or W7 but you can change the setting from using 12 percent of your hard drive down to whatever. I always set mine and my clients to like 6 percent.

My machine only creates restore points about every other day and its only one per day.

no im using vista..
and to change it i had to use the prompt window and set the maximum in gb...
it was around 40 gb.. i took it down to 3.. and now everything is just fine :)
