I have 4 slots and I am running dual channel with 512MB in 2 slots and 2GB in the other 2 slots. That's 5 gigs. Would it be best to keep it like this, or to run only 4 gigs without the two 512MB modules?
Get a program such as CPUz and confirm you are running in duel-channel mode. As long as you are, you'd probably be better off with 5GB. While having more sticks does tend to slow things down, the differences are so minute, you probably wouldn't notice the difference.
If you're machine's going slow with 5GB RAM, it sounds like there may be something else wrong.
In that case, I wouldn't touch the RAM. I'd start looking elsewhere. Has it always been slow? How are your other specs?
what speed does cpuz state your ram is running at??
ddr2?
