help creating a boot disk and how to boot from a cd or usb

I am going to download ultimate boot disk and see if i can get my computer to boot. The problem is I don't know which type of disk to use (cd-rw, cd-r, dvd). Which one is it? I have cd-r and dvd disks. I also have a flash drive I could use. Also, how would I make the computer boot from a cd disk or usb? I read somewhere that you have to change the BIOS settings before you create the boot disk but it din't really say how you would do that.

I am at the AwardBios setup utility on the computer that will not boot but I am not sure what to change. help please :)

Your dvd rom drive is set to boot before the hard drive which is what you want. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Does your computer not boot into windows?

You need to see the size of the file that you gonna download..
If he is bigger than 700MB than you need a DVD (preferably DVD-R) for it, if its smaller than you can use a CD (preferably CD-R) to burn the image (the ultimate boot disk) you can use NERO because once double clicked in the image to burn he asks you for a blank media (CD or DVD) because he reconizes in what kind of media it got to be recorded..
About using USB pens..dont think that your BIOS can really boot from USB Sticks (how old is your Computer?)
About your device priority is ok like it is to boot first from you CD or DVD (ultimate boot disk)
I realized another thing..
You dont have a DVD burner in that computer,so if the ultimate boot disk is bigger than 700MB, you will need to burn the DVD in another PC or buy a DVD Recorder..

Well, the computer can start but it doesn't go past the part where it attempts to load. Before that it asks me to choose an operating system. Anyways, the computer just keeps restarting itself over and over again. I see the fan spinning so I guess that is not the problem. My problem is that I can't get to the log on screen at all. It is a good computer even though it might it is a little bit old. It has the windows xp home edition but I can't tell how old it is. It worked just fine before my cousin used it one day and then it crashed. I read on google that creating a boot disk would solve my problem so that is what I am trying to do right now. I think the computer I am using has a dvd burner (http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/8703/fdzfyhhg.png)...or not but it doesn't matter since the size of the file is 115 MB. I can burn it on a cd-r then.

Have you tried safe mode to boot to windows?
to acess safe mode:
power up the computer and start pressing F8 continually until you reach a menu where you can use up and down arrows to choose the safe mode and hit enter.
what the computer gonna try to do is just boot the windows without any thing else (hopefully you have a corrupted driver that is not allowing your pc to boot properly and will boot in safe mode with no problems...)
After boot to safe mode choose system restore and choose a date before the problem starting to happen.
Hope that helps getting your old PC get back on the horse..:)
 
I selected safe mode and it restarts itself as usual but before it did a bunch of words popped up on the screen that sort kind of looked like this "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition" . I don't know if that was there before though. At this point I don't care if I lose any pictures or any other information that's on that computer. do you think this can be fixed?

So I then disabled automatic restart after system failure and after a few restarts I got this message "top:c000021a {fatal system error} he session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000). He system has been shut down.

I think this computer is screwed. what a scary message!

Have someone being touching in your BIOS?
What i could googled that error code is that your HDD is configured as AHCI and not IDE or ATA as it should be.
To get acess to the BIOS of the computer:
power up the computer and start pressing TAB continually until you reach the POST (Is were he tells you wich key you need to press to enter BIOS Setup (probably ESC,or F1,or F2,or DEL or a few more..)
After being able to enter in the BIOS you need to find the Drives section and in there you need to find something related with SATA operation mode
and change it from AHCI to ATA or IDE.

When I press tab something pops up but it goes away in less than a second so there is no time to read what it says and then it goes to the screen where it says "please select the operating system to start"

Not sure but i think to acess AwardBios is in DEL key,so fire your computer
and start hitting DEL key continually until he reaches the BIOS.
Then do the rest of the steps that i posted earlier.

There are five categories (main, advanced,power,boot,exit)
Under Main it has the system time, system date, language, floppy diskette a, prime master, primary slave, secondary master, and secondary slave.

Under advanced it has the plug and play Os, reset configuration data, onboard video memory, primary video adapter,ps/2 mouse, usb legacy mode support, supervisor password, user password, local bus IDE adapter, onboard LAN, onboard audio, hardward monitor, I/o device configuration.

on the side it says exit setup utility and save your changes to CMOS.

EDIT: I tink I found it. I hit del and came to another screen . it says primary slave drive fails. press f1 for setup and f2 to continue

Humm...
Do you know wich device is atached as primary slave?
That one isnt working properly either..
About you BIOS..you are right..nothing there to change the SATA operation mode..
Try to reset configuration data under advanced menu, save changes and exit from BIOS..
If it still doing the same try this:
unplug all your IDE devices form motherboard and conect them again and do the same thing for the SATA conectors..probably you have one of does devices not well conected and that is giving you errors..

I am trying to understand but I really have no idea. Next to Primary Slave it says auto. I reset the configuration data but nothing changed.There were two cables disconnected "p8" and "p9". I don't know where they go though or if it was like that when I bought it. I don't see any wholes to put them in either unless they are hiding somewhere. k I disconnected and reconnected everything.

You think the boot disk will work or is it something else that needs to be fixed first.

Those P8 and P9 are/were for old motherboards that needed those conectores.
About your IDEs are this ones that you need to unplug and plug back again:

I hope your HDD isnt dying...:o
How old is your PC anyway?
