Which Power Supply

i have decided to blow most of my money on my psu since it is basically the weakest part of my computer right now. i figure i should go at least 700w or above just to give me a couple years before i need a new one. i have narrowed it down to two that i really like:

both are modular, have blue leds (the second one has white and blue), are above 700w, and have an mtbf of 100,000 hours. i believe kingwin is a good company, but correct me if i am wrong. what i have listed is basically the extent of my knowledge of power supplies so i was hoping i could get some help. which one should i get?
 
i plan on eventually getting a quad core cpu at around 3.5+ ghz and having a crossfire hd 5770 setup. i want it to be overkill but am i overkilling by a lot? i have 5 120 mm fans with led (including heatsink) and one 200 mm with led. 2x2gb ddr2 ram but eventually ddr3 (i hope this will last until my bigger upgrades). 2-3 sata hard drives. 1 sata dvd drive. i really prefer modular because it really eliminates clutter and looks good. the led is not necessary at all.
 
ok 750 is not that overkill... with 2 5770 i would go 750 or even 800 lol. id go with that corsair or the antec earthwatts, those are nice PSU's and kingwin... never even heard of them. you dont want to cheap out on ur PSU because the power could not be constant. there could be voltage spikes and suck which could ruin hardware. antec/corsair/(GOOD)OCZ/thermaltake/coolermaster/sometimes zalman are good brands to stick with.

A nice 650W would prolly run that...but something good would be to pickup that 750W antec in my last post then. Its a few bucks more, and it is modular, plus its a great quality unit.
 
650 i think is too low, when i put in a second 9800 GTX+ for dual SLI, i lost performance due to lack of power >.< but i agree 100 % with bomber the antec earthwatts is great:D

Dont skimp on a power supply,if it fails, it usually takes out other components alongside it.

650 isnt too low, ive heard people running two gtx285's & and overclocked i7 on a 610W pcp&c silencer, and three 280's on a pcp&c 750W with room to spare. A single 5770 doesnt use anywhere near what a 285 or 280 does.
 
how many 12v rails should a xxxw psu have? what i mean is, what is the maximum number of watts per rail (while still being safe)? i have seen some with six and some with four.
 
Good quality units can deliver more than they are rated for (sometimes, good models only) whereas cheapies like kingwin, a-power, rosewill etc may pop like a firecracker once they get 100% load...

I would say a 700w Thermaltake/Antec/Corsair/OCZ/Seasonic could run that.
 
On the 4/6 rail thing,

Ive heard that you would be better off having jus one big rail, like a big 60a rail would be great.

But i have seen some decent quality 4 rail 12v systems, but it always just comee back to price, and how much you want to pay...

Those 6 rail systems are way to much money, ive seen some go for 250-400$ crazyness...

Close, but not quite. Cheap units are rated for peak power, a quality unit is rated for continuous power. Not to mention, a 5770 has a single 6pin connector, which provides 75W and a max of 75W from the pcie slot. Thats 300W total for two cards, a mobo/cpu/accessories are not going to use 450W.


Rails really mean very little, single rail units are generally preferable but many of the higher wattage units are "multi rail"(spread over multiple rails with a single transformer).

it seems to be a good psu. it is corsair, modular, and has great reviews. but it does seem to be pricey. i guess i'll let the forum decide: is this a good deal or no?
