Game slowed down.

So I had been playing Mass Effect 1 for the PC for about 2 weeks now, then out of the blue, one day the game started lagging horribly. It does the same lag regardless of the graphics settings (my laptop was able to handle it pretty well on super high when I first played the game). But even on the lowest setting, it is still unplayable due to the slowdown.

I'm running all of my virus and spyware software right now, but everything seems to be coming up clean so far.

Ant other ideas what the problem could be?

Did you recently install a new anti-virus/spyware/malware program or updated to a new one? Try turning all of them off and see if it does anything.

I don't know what is good for temps, but this is what core temp says after a few minutes of playing the game.

TJ Max - 105c low high load
core #0 - 55c 54c 56c 100%
Core #1 - 49c 48c 49c 100%

Did you restart? Sounds like the mobo underclocked your gpu because it was getting too hot. A few minutes later it could be much cooler too, or else the mobo underclocking would be pointless because the heat would still destroy the card.

yes no maybe so?

@Motoxrdude

The only thing i've installed recently was superanti-spyware, but that was a few days before the problem began.

@Flaming afro

I think that may have been the problem, because when I turned it off for the night it was doing better in the morning. How can I prevent it from getting too hot then? I don't want to burn anything out that's for sure. ;)

UPDATE: I can confirm now that the game has been working good now. But why did this all happen?

Where was the laptop when it happened? Was it on your desk or a bed? Was there anything around it that could have blocked the vents? Also, if you haven't opened the bottom up and gotten the dust out that could be the problem.

Also, as soon as you do a restart it will no longer be underclocked, you don't have to wait in case it happens again.

Unfortunately the design of the laptop has all of the fans on underside. It normally just sits on a chair or my lap, so its probable that they were getting blocked. I can't seem to find a good way to let them vent out.

There are chill pads that will help keep it cool that are comfortable on your lap. I've never played on my lap so I can't link you one, I just have heard of people using them.

Yeah, you definitely want to get a chill pad for any laptop that you own, well greatly extend the performance and life of you laptop. Furthermore, did you buy Mass Effect through Steam? When I start having the problem that you listed, I shut down and re-open Steam and that fixes it for me, but I also bought it through Steam. Sometimes though, I have to restart the computer, something with that game that causes that. Oh, and don't try alt+tabbing out of it too much either, it really doesn't like that... (It'll take 30 to 45 seconds to come back, and if you do it to many times, like 4 or 5 it won't come back at all)...
