i got my 500 watt thermaltake modular about a week ago and am soooo happy. i had my old one sitting on my desk and decided to scrap it. i got 2 fans, a switch, ect.

BUT, the thing that worried me was ALL of the caps were bulging and had some red crap on them(kind of like rust) i think i was about _this close to blowing it up

480 watt a-power. the manufacture date was june/2006. i cant beleive it powered my rig for 6 months. lol, i paid $3 for it

You should know better than to use an off brand unit like that:P

lol, i bought it when i was a noob;)

the only thing is that my new power suppl yis too big for my case(not really, but i can fit in the additional mounting bracket). but this is my friends old case and his 600 watt ocz fit in fine

i thought all atx psu's were the same size?

Your Apower may have been a microatx size unit, an ATX unit is 5.5x6x3.5 dimension wise.

but my friend had an ocz 600 watt in it and it fit fine. and the apower is atx, but side by side the new one is slightly longer(maybe 5mm)

already took out the fans, hooked them up to a switch and an old dc adapter and installed(zip tied) them in my case

ahh yes, mine is 5.9x6.3x3.4

it was unplugged for a good week or so, i figured it would be safe.

how long can the caps hold a charge?
They CAN hold charge for a long time, especially in a power supply that the cap is undervolted, as the cap will insulate better at lower voltages... just like the capacitor in a tv.... you really should use a resistor to discharge it properly.

meh, i didnt take any caps out, just unplugged the one fan, and the other was soldered onto the noard so i ripped out the cables, then cut the wires to the switch. i got them all wired up in my pc and my cpu went down to 24c idle, gpu to 38c idle
