Ubuntu problems

So my teacher was fixing up a celeron laptop (technology teacher) and put ubuntu 9.1 on it. it runs great but wants to fix it so that on log in screen you can log into a windows server box (The school has one big server that has 1TB and on it all the students accounts are stored and can be accessed from any computer running 2000/xp etc connected to the Domain) I said this was impossible but he said it was mad but not impossible. so for all your geniuses out there how can you log into a windows user account from linux (not file sharing). I have never been confused in my life. and if we get it fixed more cookie points for me in tech :o

I don't think you can bind linux clients to an AD domain controller. Google it and find out...

If you want to file share google samba

I don't have a ton of experience as I am setting this up at home currently. I know there is a way to do what you want it do to because we have it a my work, I am currently figuring out how to do it at my home lab.

Windows server supports Unix logon if they have installed that add on, that will sync your credentials. You might also need to run LDAP server to allow this to work...

If you aren't looking to have multiple people log onto it but just have access to the schools central hard drive you can mount your folder with samba and enter your active directory credentials.

You can authenticate only, you cannot manage a linux box from a windows server, that would require you run an enterprise level version of linux that has group policy and client management built in.

You have to either bind it, via WinBIND or you have to use kerberos. Google it and you will get billions of how to docs.

Ok. heres what we done:

Old laptop with ubuntu 9.1 on it and ethernet enabled.

We want it to be able to log into windows server like they way you log into a account on windows xp or vista. Because around the school there's windows xp/2000 machines hooked up to a school domain that we can log in like username ba2006 etc and they are all ethernet connected to a server in the basement running windows server i believe (it has 1TB of storage for us etc). We want to be able to use the ubuntu machine like the computers in the class rooms so we can enter ba 2006 in to the username and then our password and run windows on the laptop.

Like I already explained you can authenticate against Active Directory and you can use kerberos and winBIND (if supported by Ubuntu) but it will not be like logging into a school computer as a windows domain controller cannot manage a linux box with group policy.

Google the info, there are probably 100s of 1000s of articles out there that are specific to your version of Linux and Windows.

I'm so confused ATM my tech teacher said it would be possible. we got to a bit at login but we had to open firewall ports on the computer. and when we did it still gave the error so i'm looking for an alternative way to do it. Oh and i found out how to do file sharing. weird the go in finder (mac) is like the go in ubuntu

OK I will try to explain this one more time, but the rest of it will be up to you, as you will need to read up on the subject. It isn't something where someone can just say, the answer is C...

OK, you can set up LDAP and winBIND on your Windows server, which will allow you to authenticate with an AD account, and possibly map home folders.

File sharing, requires Samba, which is the open source version of SMB (server message block) which is part of the application OSI layer that does windows file sharing, and it includes all sorts of stuff like authentication as well.

The server needs to be configured so this client can use the server and the client needs to be bound to the domain controller to authenticate with network accounts on the client.

now, you can Google search and buy books and enjoy reading up on it for the next month since there is a lot of information out there on this.
