Building a PC for the first time.

As I'm inexperienced in this, I'm looking for a basic idea from more experienced people. I want to build a desktop PC used primarily for gaming (I may do some other basic things like Excel and general web browsing, but that's it). The maximum budget is $1500 (not including a monitor, mouse, keyboard); it'd be nice for it to be cheaper than that, but feel free to go as close to that mark as you want. So, what would be your recommendation?

Price can be put down a lot if you would like to go with a phenom II X4 but the i7 is A LOT better
if you dont want the SSD let me know i will put the money somewhere else or leave it out and throw in a few minor upgrades

Hmm...what kind of minor upgrades would be in place of the SSD? :P

Also, I was wondering what the difference between the 5870 and 5850 is. Is it significant enough to warrant the jump in price or is it fairly negligible?
 
I will caution you that the Antec CP-1000 PSU is not a standard ATX size CPU and will not fit in a standard case. The last time I looked Antec makes 3 cases that will fit it, the 1200, the P183, and the P193. It is possible to mod some cases to fit it, but it will not be a direct bolt in.

The case personally i like the HAF 932, has a lot of airflow but its a bit ugly and big in my opinon. If you dont have room, the HAF 922 has a lot of airflow also.

Both of those cases have very good airflow, and easy nice cable management
 
Alright, I took some of the advice from here and tweaked it a bit. Tell me what you think of this.

Case - Cooler Master HAF 932
Motherboard - Intel X58 ATX
CPU - i7-930
CPU Cooling - Corsair Cooling Hydro Series CWCH50
Power Supply - Corsair CMPSU-750TX
GPU - Radeon HD 5850
RAM - G.Skill 6GB (3 x 2) 240-Pin DDR3 1333
HDD - Western Digital 750GB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
ODD - LiteOn Black
OS - Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit

That comes to a little over 1400 including shipping. Anything I missed that I should have? Any suggestions or concerns, ways to drop price without losing too much, etc are welcome because...well, I don't want to set this up and then realize that I failed somewhere lol.

Dont forget Thermal Paste if you dont already have it.
In that build you just posted, you forgot to mention Graphics Card.

What about optical drive, and GPU?
I would get an ASUS P6T MOBO over that if you want to stay with the 1366 socket. You have a 3 channel system with 2 sticks also. Yes it can be done but you should get three together. Did you review the links I gave you? You can drop a lot of price without losing almost any performace by going with a i5.

You can usuallly save $20 by going with the Corsair 650TX, it will power any single GPU system.

I gotta agree with Gabe on those, sorry was doing a quick skim. If you need to lower the price a little to get the optical and GPU included, you can always get the HAF 922 case and add the extra 2 fans, The temperature should be about the same, maybe a degree or two warmer (celsius)

Looks Good, Do i7-930, or the i5 series, either is good, both wont hold you back in gaming or any usage anytime soon.

So I didn't screw up anything obvious apart from what was just corrected? I'm never confident in my own ability to do things correctly without experience :(
 
There is nothing wrong with an i7 build, the i5 receomendation is only to save money if needed.

The GPU is good, your post made me think you were going to an OEM intel MOBO, the ASUS you picked is great.

You should buy 3 sticks of 2g memory at once if you can, and if you are going with the 1366 socket (i7).

Oh, I was just making sure I didn't pick things that wouldn't be compatible (did that while compiling the first version of the list, felt stupid, rectified :P). And yeah...probably should've mentioned that the motherboard wasn't OEM, but I wanted to type it through quickly so I didn't pay much mind to it. I swapped out the 2x2 for 3x2...the cost was negligible really, only a bit more so that's all good.

I appreciate all the help everyone :) I'll make sure to let you know how it goes!
 
Cool, the 1366 is 3 ch mem, if you use 2 sticks you only use 2 of the 3. Also your comp will support 1600 without overclock. 1600 usually costs the same as 1333 mem. Everything looks good.
