Backup hdd Question

So I'm running a WD 500 gb caviar black in my tower. I wanted to get another internal and have it as a back up drive so I can clone my main drive in case of failure. I'm running windows 7 ultimate.

My questions are:

1. What software do I need to clone onto the new drive.

2. Is there any way to make the backup internal drive turn on (once a day at a certain time) and back up files, then shut off when it's done?

Thanks in advance

I use Windows Backup and it does a great job of creating a system image that you can restore and backups of any files of your choice.

You have Ultimate, so you can do it right out of the box.

I can't really answer your questions about making a copy from an already existant drive...I have never really looked into it. There is RAID 1 that will keep an exact copy of your primary drive. That has to be done before you load Windows.

I assume that RAID 1 is what you are looking for.

I keep everything backed up on a secondary drive but a little bit differently. I have a second drive that has copies of all movies, pictures, music and program files. When I download a program file, such as CCleaner, I save the exe. file in a folder on my secondary drive. That way I don't have to mess with RAID but I still have everything important and the program files on a backup.

To set up a RAID 1 machine...you will need 2 identical drives and re-install everything.

Oh okay I see what your saying. So you save all your movies, music, pictures, etc. on the other drive. So you also save the exe. files? that's smart, so you can just download them again without having to look up all the sites or what not.

Yea I havnt looked into the whole raid thing either.

Thanks for all the help.

Same to the person above Scout :good:
