PCI vs. AGP

i know there is pci e. i messed up and bought a board with agp and pci slots. so its now a temporary board. maybe will need to last about 6 months. i am currently running the video card listed in my signature that is pci. i would like to get a dvi card with more memory. was thinking about getting an
ATI Radeon X1600 Video Card - 512MB DDR / AGP. is this a good idea or should i get one that is PCI. basically my question is which is faster AGP or PCI. i am sure the cards listed are ancient. but i play some games and they don't require a "monster computer". lol

PCI < AGP < PCIe

FYI: There's also different PCIe. For graphics card it's PCIe x16 or PCIex8
Other cards may have PCIe x8, PCIe x4 or PCIe x1. On the motherboard, the different PCIe slots have different size, but a smaller board can go into a bigger slot (I.E a PCIe x1 card can go in any PCIe slot).

If your looking for a good card, the Radeon 9550 is a nice card for AGP.

Blazin8556, just looking at your "new computer build," you sure thats right? The specs your listing are proper old school. Probably about 5 - 10 years out of date ;P

yes unfortunately that is correct. its an upgrade from a dell dimension 2400. i do realize it is a little older than some of you guy's pcs. but this build costed me $200 as of right now vs. the $800 i wanted to spend but didn't have. i am an unemployed mechanic and now a stay at home dad. and the dell just wasn't up to par anymore. for the week i have been using this new computer i am very pleased with its performance. since we only play online games, and surf the internet, and play spore or something small like that there really isn't any need for anything any bigger. in about 4-6 months time i am gonna be upgrading to even better components. last time i built a computer from scratch was like when p3s were out and celeron's were the oc king.

also i am really behind on what new tech is out now. im still researching this stuff.

is the x1600 any good. the reason im asking is cause i can get one at a decent price i think. and it has the dvi and is 512 mb video with a pretty good size cooler on it.

Are you sure about that? I've seen one in action and it was pretty slow. I would go for the Geforce FX 5900 Ultra or the Radeon 9800. I'm not sure how good the 9800 is, but I've seen an Asus Geforce FX 5900 on the same computer as the 9550 and it ran a lot faster.

EDIT: I have heard though that the Radeon 9800 is a bit better than the FX 5900. It's worth a try. These cards are only 30-45$ on ebay, I think.

For the record, AGP is nearly identical to PCI-e 1.0 in bandwidth, so an AGP 8x slot is roughly the same as a PCI-e 8x, or a PCI-e 2.0 4x.

IF you can get hold of one, there's a few companies that make a Radeon HD4670 for AGP. That'd keep you going for quit a while.

thats a really nice card.

on the other cards, guys, they have lower or equal amount of memory as my pci fx 5500 does.

The 4650 isn't as powerful as the 4670, but it'll do just fine.

That card is cheaper at newegg:

And here's the 4670: (there should be a cheaper version somewhere...)

Newegg's HD4xx cards:

The 3xxx series has some decently powerful cards as well, but the 4xxx supports GPGPU technology, which can be very useful.

It should be ok on 350W. Your CPU and PSU together have a TDP of 139W, so I figure you'll be a bit under 200W for the whole system.

Good thing it doesn't require external power though...your PSU has no PCI-e outputs.

it does require external power. it has a 6 pin adapter that comes with it. if i have any problem ill hook another power supply up for just a bit more power. i have a few psu's laying around here. only thing is, they are for top mount cases and all their cords are real short. my v3 needs a longer setup. my new psu hasn't come in yet. should be here monday.

Whoa, you're right...WTH? The 4650/70 design doesn't usually require external power. If my brother's MSI 4670 can get by with that massive fan and no extra power, I don't see why this thing can't...

In that case, though, I'd get a new PSU ASAP. That one should be ok for a while, but Molex connectors really aren't designed to provide the kind of power that PCIe connectors can. Coolmax PSU's really aren't the best anyway....
