Need some info on AMD

okay i have a few noob questions:

Can I use a Phenom II x4 (945, 955, 965 etc) in an AM2+ baord?

What is a good AM2+ motherboard?

Does AM3 offer any performance increases besides DDR3?

I plan on moving to AMD, specifically Phenom X4, or X6 when they are released.

Most will, you just need to check the CPU support list when you pick one out. A few will have a 95W limit because they have a lowerend power setup. I would at this time go with a AM3 unless you just dont want to buy DDR3 and use some DDR2 you might have already.

You can use that processor as long as the AM2+ board is compatible with AM3. And from what I researched way back when I was looking into it,the only benefits over a 'hybird board' (AM2/AM2+/AM3) is that range of parts you can have over just an AM3 board and the parts tend to be cheaper cause there's more out there. And the benefits of having just an AM3 board is "future-proofing" and yes, the DDR3, but then DDR3 can cost more cause it's 'new'. All depends where you shop around for prices.

Example of one of many AM3/AM2+/AM2 mobos:

IIRC, the new x6 models are AM3 only, but yes, the x4 models will work. AM3 boards typically have better build quality though, and you'll have to make sure it supports 125/140 watt cpu's if you want to use the high end ones.

Between the Phenom x4 or x6, unless you are doing major design projects in autocad or pro engineer the x6 will not benefit you enough to make it worth the wait/price. I would go with the x4 and get a am3 and DDR3 to go with it.

Dont know. If your thinking about building a new AMD. The X6 1090T Black Edition unlocked running at 3.2ghz. For 300 bucks will be a killer.

That is a good point.

I would wait until the x6 cpu's are tested and new revisions come out if you plan on getting one. But at that point you may as well wait for the Bulldozer. :D

Hope Bulldozer will bring them back. Each core is called a module and is going to have two independent integer clusters, four pipelines each with its own L1 data cache. Hyperthreading on steroids.

Well before i do anything, i need money.

And even though the q9300 is not on the support list, it has been documented to work with a certain bios and ones after it, so soince im running the latest one it shouldn't be a problem.

And scout was running one in this exact motherboard anyway.

The 785 is better then the 790GX onboard video and the 890GX is better then the 785. But right calling a onboard good is kinda like saying doing the dog paddel is better then drowning.

^ Not quite. The only difference between the RS780(3xxx) and RS880(4xxx) IGP's is that the 4xxx ones have UVD2/ATI Stream and DX10.1. Other than that they're all the same core. Here's a rundown:

350MHz-
HD3000(760G)
HD3100(780V)

500MHz-
HD3200(780G/780E) (adds UVD, 8x AA)
HD4200(785G) (adds UVD2/DX10.1)

700MHz-
HD3300(790GX)
HD4280(890GX) (Can Hybrid with the HD4350 somehow)

There are also discrete cards that use the same core:

HD2350- 525Mhz core/400Mhz Memory
HD2400 Pro- 525MHz core/400MHz Memory (Hybrid Capable)
HD2400 XT- 700MHz Core/800MHz Memory
HD3450- 600Mhz Core/500MHz Memory (Hybrid capable)
HD3470- 800MHz Core/950MHz Memory (Hybrid Capable)

I should note that the IGP's tend to overclock very well. People have gotten the 785G to 1GHz, though on air 800MHz is more reasonable. Also, my brother managed to play through Crysis on a 3450, albeit on low settings...so they can handle decent gaming in a pinch. An overclocked 785G and a 3470 in hybrid actually wouldn't be too bad.
