Just bought my friends laptop need some help

Hey guys new to the form and just starting to get to know all I can about electronics and computers for my custom Van project I am doing. Heres my question:

I just bought my friends Acer laptop for $65Can but he said he plugged his adapter in one day and it smoked (maybe just shorted out the plug?). I am not worried about that right now I am more interested in the 250gb hard drive hes got. I have an Acer laptop myself with an extra hard drive slot is it possible to just plug in his old hard drive into my laptop and get the information off he needs and then use it as a secondary hard drive??

As far as I know they are both SATA.. Also it wont try to run his OS thats installed on his hard drive right? It would just act as a secondary storage device..?
 
It shouldn't. If it does you should be able to adjust the boot order in the BIOS to try and boot from your primary drive first.
 
If they use the same chipset, it's somewhat possible that it'll work, but otherwise, what Cromewell said.
