Nvidia's response to the heat and power usage with the GTX 480

Actually, there is a degree of responsiveness to be felt at higher FPS, as if you are playing a game at say 60fps and 120fps, the game running 120fps will feel far more responsive(twice the outputs=twice the chance to reeeive inputs). Visually, you will not notice a difference, however in gameplay you will.

That is still stretching it a bit. I mean you can't outperform the server and servers generally set client rates when playing online to balance things out. Playing single player, sure i guess, but even then the differences between anything that is over say 70 FPS is not going to be a huge "deal breaker" type of game play experience.

I have a friend who does nothing but work and buy gadgets. He never goes out, he doesn't drink, and he travels for part or most of his job. So he is often not even at home and when you travel for your job you don't have time to spend as much money.

He builds $5k rigs all the time, with the highest end video cards in SLI or xFire. His system runs very comparable to my $1200 system I built a year ago. Granted, it does "feel a bit smoother" but over all the game play is not epically different.

Most people cannot notice the difference, which is why modern displays are generally sold with a 60hz refresh rate as well,as for most people that is the "cap" where it cannot be seen/felt any longer. Same can be said with 5ms and 8ms displays, personally, i find an 8ms display far to slow for my tastes, while many other people with 8ms display cannot even notice the lag. Its really all down to personal opinion for alot of this stuff IMO.

OK sure, but there is a physical limit on what your brain can render and process. So there will be a varying degree since every person is different, and it also depends on how well the software is developed. Obviously crappy code will run like crap, even on the most bad ass hardware.

Once you crank up the fan to 70% or more, the temps aren't a problem, maxing out in the 70's. the default fan speed of ~20% seems to cause these issues of hgih temps... and if the chip is designed to run at that temperature i guess you can't complain.

You know that review above is contrary to every review I have seen and my own 5870 cards. They do not run that hot, not even close. Max at 77c on my cards and near that in almost any review. CF will raise the temps some on the top card.

But nvidia seems to have a history with hot cards. The GTX 275 runs at 92c and the 295 runs at least that hot. I am not excited about the noise levels but I am glad we have competition again, the 5970 keeps going up in price due to the lack of competition.

TBH, the GTX 480's GPU is much more capable of this. I'm pretty sure that the first gen Fermi GPU is underdeveloped.

Those benches are not legit. Why? Because reviewers run their cards with automatic-fan speed.. And if you have ever used the default dynamic-fan speed you'll know that they usually start on 30% and goes up to 40% when it reaches 90c.. that's too little too late.. Turn the fan up to 75% and keep it like that and you'll see a dramatic heat-decrease.. When i used dynamic-fan speed with my 275's in sli, i often reached 80c. Now, i use both on 75% fan speed and i never go above 60-63c under max load after many many hours. Thus, i use Gainward GTX 275's because they have two fans instead of one..
