Maximum Supported Memory

I have an NVIDIA nForce 780i 3-Way SLI motherboard which supports a maximum of 8GB of memory on a 64 bit OS. I have Windows 7 64-bit and 2GB x2 RAM sticks installed in the motherboard (a total of 4GB). The System tells me that there is 4GB of installed memory (RAM), however, when installing a PC game (Company of Heroes) the installer told me that there is 8GB of system memory available. I have two GeForce 9800 GTs hooked up, with 512 MB of memory each, but where would the extra 3GB of memory come from? And what exactly does it mean that the mobo supports 8GB of memory - can I actually use all that at once?
Thanks!

The motherboard supports up to 8gb of memory, you have 4 slots with a maximum of 2gb per slot so thats 4x2=8gb. Usually the only way to use that much memory would be to use auto cad programs and video editing and higher things like that. 4 to 6 gb of memory should suffice for 90 percent of users.

Are you sure this isn't just referring to the remaining disk space on your hard drive?

As I found out last weekend, the clean install button on the windows installer doesn't delete the old stuff, but it moves it into a folder called windows.old... so you could have only 8GB left... either way you should check by right clicking on your drive in my computer and selecting properties (Y)

lol no. I have a 500 GB hard drive and everything was deleted from it (reformatted) when I installed Windows 7 - so I have more than 8 GB of free space left.

It is rather odd that the Company of Heroes installer, or any installer for that matter, would report the amount of memory (as in RAM) that you have left or available. It is, however, normal for an installer to report how much hard drive space is available.

I have also noticed some installers (especially older ones) are unable to read the proper amount of disk space available in this day of terabyte drives. They often incorrectly report a capped or wildly inaccurate amount. I suspect this is what it happening in your case.
