So I decided today to see what my i7 920 could really do. I had it at 3.6ghz and knew it could do more and wanted to see what auto overclock would take it to, a nifty feature on my mobo. so it only boosted my cpu to 3.7ghz which is 206fsb x 18 multi. so ok thats cool and it only raised my cpu temps a degree or 2. but it also boosted my ram farther than I thought it could go. I had at 1200mhz, a pretty hefty oc considering it started at 1066mhz. now its 1236mhz and boy what a difference. my comp is just a little bit faster now but it is noticeable!

That's not a very big overclock, I would imagine that it's putting too much voltage through the chip as well, also, what voltage is that ram supposed to be at? 1.5V? if it is, it can probably get close to 1600mhz

Well, he doesn't have an amazing heatsink... it seems to be a respectable overclock in my book.

umm my heatsink IS amazing. my i7 idles at 38C and never goes above 45C in max load. my heatsink is arguably one of the best air coolers on the market. the megahalem is the only air cooler I have ever seen beat me. I could oc further but why bother? I may get an h50 to cool temps down for the summer but idk.

my vcore for cpu is at 1.35V only which is pretty low and stable. It used to run at 3.6ghz at 1.33V. My ram is 1.5V so I will see how high it will go and get back to u. Running stock at 1066 makes me think that getting 1600mhz is unlikely but I will see. I got some pretty golden ram!

You should definitely be able to use less voltage with those clocks(1.176V):

my ram runs stock at 1066mhz. When I get home I am going to see if it can go to 1333mhz and 7-7-7-19 timings.

yeah but its high enough to pwn anything I through at it

I'm not talking about what your mobo runs your mem at stock. I'm talking what is the rated speed your memory is suppose to run. It should be listed in the box that came with your memory.

idk I don't remember. well it failed on me today. I got three long beeps, did the tests, and now my ram is being rma'ed :( on the brightside its all free for all three sticks and they are upgrading me to their latest batch, and since they discontinued the 1066mhz hyperx series, I will be getting the new 1333mhz 240 pin ddr3 ram with heatspreaders!! I am pretty stoked on that.
