New possible computer build

Hi guys, been awhile since ive been in the computer buzz. Im currently on this rig and am possibly thinking about getting a new PC rebuild. Is it worth rebuilding with an i5? If so what i5 processors are the best cost/ratio+overclocker? Will really appreciate the help guys :D

Thanks in advance!

Btw, my Q6600 is a G0 stepping for all those oc out there! :D

^agreed. if and when you upgrade get an i7, they are better

Clock for clock the i7 is better, and they clock higher

Definately a great chip. However if you just add a gpu you'd game better. And I love my q6600.

Can handbrake a avi from native size to iphone.mp4 in 15 min (while folding on the gpu)

i5 and i7 are not light years away from eachother in performance, i would advise on a i5 rig (cheaper motherboard platform and ram)

you can overclock your q6600 and add maybe a 4890 or 5770 for a pritty balanced gaming machine

if you are like me and always look at something better your talking i7 and lots of cash to go with it!

Its really according to what he uses his computer for. If he's updating for gaming, than a gpu would be a better investment.

If he's upgrading for cpu intensive programs, either oc the q6600 or go with a i5/i7 (though for the price I'd oc the q6600)

If i was you id just overclock the Q6600...atm there realy isnt any need for a i5 or i7 system when the Q6600 along with a decent graphics card like a 5770 or 4890 or 260gtx can handle basicly anything out there atm on highest settings and still give good performance.

Going from the stock 2.4Ghz to 3.5 was a huge diffrence here....much faster.

But yes the processor been stock and that graphics card you have is holding you back....overclock that Q6600 beauty and get a better graphics card!!!

Yeah im thinking about picking myself up a 5770. They seem like a good cost/performance ratio card. But hopefully my rig can cope another year or so :D

when i had my q6600 i had it overclocked to 3.2ghz and was running 2x 4850's in crossfire and it was a very nice machine indeed!

Nowhere nearly as impressive as 3.5, but 3.2 should be easy to achieve with your q6600 go

FSB 356
multi x 9
vcore 1.35

I think my vid was 1.3 (per coretemp)

Just a thought. If i bought an AMD based system, that would include AM3 etc, would that be any improvement? It seems asif they are fairly cheap at the moment, and had interest :)

Problem is, that clock for clock t he core 2 quads are faster than the phenom ii's

AND the quads generally clock higher

maybe the old phenoms but the phenom II's are brilliant performers, tehre are only 5 or six core2quads can beat out the phenom II 965 and most of them are extreme editions (that cost a fortune)

the phenom II's are not as powerfull as the i7 cpu range but there is a phenom II 965 that performs better than the i5 750

pass mark cpu score

pheniom II 965 (4312points)
intel i5 750 (4216ponits)
intel q6600 (2955points)

off topic, what setting did you use for 3.5
and what mb do you have?

yeah i would like to know too :D

Cpu= 389 x 9 Multi = 3501Mhz (46% Overclock)
Voltage= 1.416v
FSB= 1556.8Mhz

Motherboard = Asus P5Q SE P45

cant remember every exact setting,This mobo has lots of options :eek:

yep they sure are, nice performing and cheap!!

They are yes...but a pointless upgrade if you have a high clocked Q6600 because i was tempted to get a 965 black but was told it wasnt worth it going from what i already had.

to the OP....like i said,Id just OC the cpu...get better gpu and your set,No need for an expensive i5/i7 upgrade.
