this may be a newb question, but i would rather ask, than be regretting downloading something later. i was going to watch a movie on my computer tonight, but forgot about the DVD decoder thing. Is there a good, free, and legal, download for a decoder? if not, what about a good player that i download for free? thanks.

lubo: tried it, and WMP said i needed the decoder.

mediaseo: sorry, didnt even give searching on here a thought...

Have you installed K-Lite mega codec pack?
I have no problems playing dvd's on mine.
Also are you using a current version of WMP?

i have WMP 11. i tried VLC, but it is slow, and the video jumps around for some reason.

i will try K-lite, then get back with you all.

with K-lite downloaded, WMP jumps around also. here is a list of the specs (link) (use "small mini tower specs") it is an older dell optiplex gx280. i have 2.5 gb of ram installed, and a dvd drive, other than that, it is all original. i freshly installed xp yesterday, because a few years, it had like 10 viruses and trojans on it, and i never got around to fixing it until now.

Make sure you have the latest video drivers, it sounds like your processor is handling the video decoding which is why the DVD is playing slowly. VLC is always fast for me. You could try Media Player Classic.

i went to dell and dowloaded the video card drivers. could it be that i forgot to download the driver for the dvd drive?

oh, ok. didnt know that. the drivers for the sound and video were downloaded straight from dell's support website, so i would think those are up to date, but who knows... how do i go about making sure they are up to date?

edit: here are the drivers i downloaded for the computer: (link to driver download site)
audio driver
bios
chipset
diagnostics
system utilities
both video drivers.
i did not do anything with the networking drivers.
