Free Web Editors vs. Commercial Web Editors

Hi.

I'm about to design my website, but I don't yet have any web editing software. I'm wondering whether or not it's worth spending some money to have a quality commercial web editor like adobe dreamweaver. Or are free web editors just as good?

My site will be used primarily for showcasing my 2-d artwork, which will be arranged in thumbnails that can be enlarged. But I may also want to have a blog on there, or at least a section where I can post my own rants. I may also want to put my own home-made videos on there. But all of that can wait; for now I'm content just showcasing my 2-d art.

Thanks.

That will really depend on the content that you wish to place on your site. As a general rule, "free" products or services (may it be free web editor, free web host etc.) are not as reliable as paid products. You can probably try free web editors first and it they don't provide you what you need in building your site, then go for a paid one.

I just use the good ole Notepad.

Real men use vi.

Of course these "real men" also wear straight jackets and jabber on how Miley Cyrus doesn't have an annoying voice... Notepad++ is my personal favourite, those IDEs generally make messy code that could be equaled by having a major keyboard accident!

It really depends on your level of knowledge of HTML, CSS, JS etc...

If you dont know much about them, commercial software like Dreamweaver allows you to design the page by look, or by coding. Where as things like Notepad and Notepadd++ only allow you to code your page, you can only view it when you open it in a web browser.

If you are a complete webmastering noobie I really suggest getting some hosting that includes a good cpanel with something like Fantastico that will let you easily install Wordpress. Then you can simply find a wordpress template to your tastes and then "blog" your pictures to a theme that showcases them well.

There are plenty of themes with 6 - 8 blog posts arranged in a rectangular fashion on the front page. Then the user can click the "older posts" button - you can name it what you want - and they will see the next eight images.
