Removing a Core2 Processor/Heat Sink

How do you remove a Core2 heat sink? It has these 2 clips, kiddy corner from each other on the heat sink, which are hooked underneath these irremovable loops built into the motherboard. How is someone supposed to be able to remove this?

I've never removed one, only installed a stock intel hsf once

If you look in this pic, there is a split with 2 tabs that hold the hsf in place, even after twisting. Just squeeze on the bottom and pull up.

You'll have to remove the mb from the case

I am not sure what exactly you mean by irremovable loops. On a standard heatsink, when looking at the heatsink, twist all of the clips counter-clockwise, then gently pull/wiggle the heatsink simultaneously and it should come out.

^I second that. The Intel heatsinks are EXTREMELY annoying to install, but taking them out is pretty easy, I think. All you have to do is what Aastii said: twist the little push-in things counter-clockwise. You should hear a little clicking noise for each one, if I'm remembering right. Then it should come right out after lifting it up. It sounds like you have a different kind of heatsink, though. If it's an Intel stock one, it should look like this:

EDIT: After looking at that one pic by Cravin, it looks like you do in fact have to squeeze those little tab things on whatever heatsink that is. It's not stock Intel, but it looks pretty similar.

you don't have to squeeze them in. The way it works is when the clips are up the tabs are together and can fit through the hole. You push the clip down and it splays the tabs, you then twist to lock it in possition

Hmmm, so I have been doing it wrong.......:o

Might I also add that it helps to run your computer for a few minutes before attempting to remove the heatsink. The thermal paste will soften under the heat. Be sure to also power the system down before removing the heatsink.

I'd imagine there are several ways to go about it, but seems like an unecessary step and fiddly to squeee the tabs, and also increases the chance you damage or break them, making the heatsink useless then because it won't get enough or equal pressure down. Every single one I have used I did those steps, without squeezeing, and all have come off fine
