Games Crashing

So Ive been having the problem of virtually every game I play crashing after a random amount of time. The computer sometimes goes black but other times dark colored bars go across it while the audio loops. Is the graphics card overheating or are the drivers unstable? Any help?
 
Is there a pattern to when this happens, for instance at a certain part of games, be it intensive parts or when a certain thing happens in game?

what are your full specs?

Have you had any problems before?

If not and they have just come on, have you recently made a hardware and/or software change, anything from plugging in a new pair of headphones to putting a new CPU in, or from installing a new game to installing a second OS?

What makes you think it is video card related or heat related?

This started happening after I bought an HD4890. Im thinking its the cards fault because everything else worked fine until I switched the card in. The crashes are random during games but they usually come at intense parts. When my computer resets the video fan is going nuts so im guessing its trying to cool the card down.

Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing the new card?

To check the temps, download HWmonitor from here and play a game for 10 minutes or so, then come out and see what the highest temperature reached was on your graphics card and post it up

54C is max when I crashed last. I reinstalled all drivers after uninstalling and restarting.
 
What brand is the 4890? If it's an XFX you may have got one of the infamous "bad batch" ones...

EDIT: I just saw your specs on the wishlist there... You have a 4890 that could be bad. I suggest you run 3DMark Vantage or 3DMark06 and tell us the scores you get. anything under 10,000 in vantage means you have a bad batch card.

Or you could just RMA the card for it locking up.

where do i check what the GFX card scored? all I have is the full score at 42640 and the only other number is 1413 for CPU score. i used the free version and went to the site to view my score.
 
Just go here, sign up, register your card and start a support ticket:

tell them the problem and what you've done, and that the cards are known to a bad batch. if they ask you to test the card in another system just tell them you have, otherwise it's just a useless delay.
