CPU overheating

What heat sink are you running? And also what thermal paste? Your best bet is to change the thermal paste to something good like Arctic Siliver.

Where's the last core, #3? Try Core Temp or Real Temp to verify the dig differences in core temperatures. As 87dtna said ^. Could be inadequate amount or application of thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink or uneven pressure holding the sink against the CPU, (push pin failure or screws not evenly tightened). I'd dismount the cooler and have a look.

There should have been some thermal paste on the back of the cooler from the factory. But thats where I was going next was that the pins were not all pushed in so the heatsink isn't pressed against the CPU evenly. Did all the pins click when you pressed them in? It's not in the whole way if you didn't hear the click.

will check it out now, thanks!
ohh y, i was wondering too why there's no core3. real temp doesnt show sign of a 3rd CPU either ;S

What operating system do you have?

Open task manager (hit ctrl/alt/delete at the same time) and it will show you also how many cores it has. If it's only 3 and not 4, well it's either a driver issue, or somehow the settings in the Bios disabled a core.

Oh, and don't remove the heatsink while the computer is on! Sure fire way to fry your CPU LOL.

i figured that much ;p
i got the heatsink off now, i see that the thermal paste is a bit.. old? there are blind spots etc. could that be the problem?
i got windows XP 32-bit home edition

Yeah OK sounds like this is just a thermal paste issue. Get some new stuff. You have any local computer stores? Try to find a ''silver'' based thermal paste. If you have a Staples nearby, if I'm in a pinch I go there and pick up a tube they have of Antec Formula 5, it's silver based and pretty darn good. It's $10 for 3.5grams.

So to apply it, just make sure the CPU and the heatsink are totally clean. Rubbing alchohol is best with a couple cutips or something. Then simply apply a dot of the new thermal paste right in the center of the CPU, about the size of a grain of rice thats all you need. They put the heatsink back on, making sure to hear the click on every corner.

already bought some arctic silver 5 on the internet, should arrive soon. though i have trouble putting my fan back on the CPU ;S the pins wont click like they did before. and now the heat has risen to like 60 :O
i suck at this computer stuff.

already bought some of that arctic silver 5 on the internet. though i cant put my fan on my CPU properly >;( the pins wont click like they did before. and i dont dare to use force, dont want to break anything ;S
damn i suck at this computer thing

You have to turn the clips back. To dismount you had to turn them counter clockwise, to remount, while the heatsink is removed, turn them back clockwise and then remount.

as 87dtna said, turn the clips clockwise and then push them in. so long as you support the back of the motherboard, you won't break anything, it is meant to have a large amount of pressure on the CPU, that is to ensure the heatsink is making sufficient contact with the chip
