Is this possible to run GeForce GTX 480 with a 550W power supply?

BTW, my GTX 275 worked fine with 440W power supply, not the recommended 500W :)

Short answer- no.

Long answer, one or two of the 550W power supplies out there may run a GTX 480 but you will really be pushing them. I'd aim for at least 600W. You can get a good deal on one of the best 750W's on the market, a pc power and cooling silencer 750W, its recertified, but the price you cannot argue with:

+1.

the recomended for a 480 (from EVGA, is the same for the others though) is Minimum of a 600 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 42 Amps.)

I would probably go a bit higher. Like others have said, at least around 650w, if not more. The GTX 480 alone pulls 400w at max load, if I remember right. I'm also guessing, if you're buying a 480, that your CPU pulls a good deal of power as well. With all your other components calculated in, it probably totals to around 600w. You should also always buy a PSU with at least 50-100w more than you need.

Two 480's in sli should use about 600-700w so whether it would work or not, you should buy something a bit more futureproof like 750w+.

What EVGA recommend is still far from the card's Usage. 550w will most likey work, but there wont be much room for overclocking and you can forget about sli'ing later.

go for 600w if you don't want to sli later.. go for 750-800w+ if you want to sli.

Edit: I have Gainward GTX 480, unfortunately i have nothing that can mesure the W-usage. But, my PSU doesn't heat up like it did before with my 275's in sli. So, i donno.

I have this PSU, and it's a very good, solid PSU that will be able to run what you need and also be "futureproof" to some degree as previously mentioned.

The other positive is that the main 12 volt power supply is all on one rail so you don't have to worry about overloading the PSU by not balancing the system components properly.

I agree. That PSU is good and should be able to handle a system with GTX 480 perfectly.

quick facts:

1) no such thing as "future proof"

2) Power supplies are the backbone of your system, as they supply power to all components. Do not skimp out on your PSU. Buy a good one, and if you get killer deals off of newegg you can get a good one for a good price

I bought an Antec 900w True Wattage PSU last year, with like 20 modular connections. I bought it off of Newegg for $99, as it had like $100 instant savings on it during their holiday sale.

Just keep shopping you will find a good PSU.

It might have ran it but not at its full potential + it risked your rig because when you overload like that and it blows it can take your entire system out and fry every part its connected too.

Seems really worth it now eh? :P

The silencers are single rail as well, plus higher quality seasonic build units to boot;)
