When choosing a CPU...

What is the criteria I need to match up when it comes to choosing a CPU?

I understand that the socket type obviously has to be supported but what about the FSB? My current fsb is 800MHz but when I look up my mobo, it shows that it supports 1066/800/533. How do I know for sure? Do I get processors that are 800MHz just to be safe?

Thanks. :)

that is just the speed of your ram. it wont' affect which CPU you can or cannot use.

yes it will FSB is the bus speed between the cpu and the northbridge then the northbridge uses the memory bus to get to the ram although they are directly related they operate differently

to the op

you will be able to use any cpu with those bus speeds, i think you can use faster but it will just be downclocked to 1066 mhz,

what mobo do you have and whats your budget me or another member will be able to get you a cpu that is compatible

I already got myself a gaming rig and I'm giving my old one to my little brother. It's a stock emachines T3656 but I don't believe in wasting and I know that it can't be the newest and fastest rig for today's games but I just don't wanna see it wasted. It's still in great condition even after 3 years!

Here's the link I found for the mobo:
945GCT-M3

At the bottom of it, it says only A2 chipset can support 1066MHz and 667 memory.
I took a snapshot of what cpuid showed me:

machines2y.jpg

My chipset rev shows A2. Am I right on that?
Either way, if it doesn't support 1066MHz, the highest cpu supported shown here Supported CPU is Core 2 Duo E4700.

I already have a 450W PSU and a 92mm rear fan (that didn't came with the desktop, lol.)
I have no budget necessarily, as long as the cpu is compatible and the highest the mobo can support. That's all I want. :)

Only thing you need to do is find out the model number of your motherboard. Go to manufacture website and look for CPU support list.

I would make sure. I'm not sure about a eMachine forum but I would check that out if you can find one. I have a Dell P4 PC and asked on a Dell forum about mine and I found out I can go from a Pentium 4 to a Dual Core Pentium D with a simple BIOS update. So that's what I did.

what? your question maybe a simple question but you failed to provide the most basic information in your post such as your motherboard.
maybe your are not aware that simply stating the fsb support does not confirm which cpu's are compatible.
budget is also important thats why i asked as how can i find you a decnt link if i have no budget for you, i am meant to assume you have no real budget and link you to the best most expensive cpu out there?

your mobo is rev 2 and supports 1066 Mhz FSB, the revision a1 is in relation to the celeron
so any cpu in that list will work fine, obviously you want to go for the best C2D which loks to be the X6800

I understand that giving you just the fsb doesn't help but I later gave a link to the mobo and mentioned that I don't have a budget necessarily.

Anyway, I moved to tom's. I found my answer there without people telling me there's no point upgrading a stock machine. Not everybody wants a gaming rig and not everybody wants their computers to be the greatest and the fastest.
Since day one I was here, everybody always gives me the newest and best hardware that just came out. I bought a Radeon 4850 and it's 98% according to game-debate and it ran great, but when I asked, everybody said get 5770 get 5770. The 4850 was half the price of a 5770 and does a great job. So, even if I were to mention a budget, someone would still say get a 5770.

There are a lot of people on the forums here that are over zealous for top of the line equipment. I don't like upgrading my computer all the time with expensive parts and I actually want to save money for retirement. I guess you and I are a little more practical when it comes to $$$.

I guess so. I don't mind spending less if it means I get a decent hardware that takes care of what I need instead of paying high prices for something that will do just the same thing.
I'm outta here. Take care K. maybe I can email you if I have a question.

There are some great knowledgeable users here on these forums. I wouldn't count ComputerForum.com out yet. You just need to learn who to listen to.

i understand you you said you had no budget after id asked but in your reply you said this is a noob question, how can you say that we wont answer a noob question and in the same post only, for the first time, give us the basic information of your comp

no-one this particular post has said that you shouldnt upragde the emachines and i am in perfect agreement with you that technology should not go to waste

im sorry the answer to your post took so long, that was my fault, im online very sporadically atm due to where im living and what im doing
