Use static ip adress at home and dchp everywhere else?

Because I like to keep a VNC server running on my laptop, I have a static IP assigned. Now, I am heading to my uncles. He has wifi, but my static ip settings obviously don't work. I was wondering if it is possible to make my laptop use a static ip while I am at home and use dchp everywhere else? Just so I don't have to go into the network connections every time I take my laptop somewhere and then change it back once I get back home? Preferably a fix without using extra software, but if necessary, I would use a program. Thanks.

If you are using Windows then in the TCP settings dialog there is an 'alternative settings' tab that you can use.

But this requires static IP everywhere. I want to have static IP at home and use DCHP everywhere else.

here's one possible solution:

configure your tcp/ip settings with dynamic ip address/dhcp
and configure your router dhcp lease to infinite/forever so it never gives out new addresses. Then set up your port forwarding and youre good to go

How does that help him when he goes to someone elses house??

I have wondered about this issue too but hit a road block trying to figure it out. When I go somewhere I just change my settings over to automatically obtain ip address, then save all my home preferences on a word document and type them back in when i get home.

When he goes to someone's house he'll connect to their network using dhcp. When he goes back home he'll get reassigned the old ip address on his network because his router is configured with a very long dhcp lease.

I seem to recall something in DD-WRT that allows certain computers to retain their IP address. I'm thinking it's assigned by DHCP but essentially static. Of course this depends on the router.

Yeah that's what I have to do to. Major PITA. But I get what rif is saying. I jut thought there might be an easier software solution. But thanks you guys.
