error message

I guess this is the correct subforum to post this in. I bought a Verizon air card and plugged in into my laptop. When it was almost installed, the screen turned black and gave me the following message:

"Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt:

systems32\Drivers\Nfts.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using original cd rom.

Select 'r' at the 1st screen to start repair."

Whe I select 'r' it takes back to the same error message. What is the problem and what should I do? Thanks :)

You are using the windows XP cd right? And it is giving you the same message? Just to clarify.
 
Were you typing R at the screen to enter recovery console or the next screen to actual repair the OS? There is a difference. Also, what kind of cd are you using? Is it a genuine microsoft install cd or an OEM recovery cd?

not sure. sorry. I'm not sure if I have the cds. All I did was press 'r'.
 
What type of cd are you using? Or did you not put any cd in the drive? That's what that message was telling you that you had to put the install cd in and press R at the prompt to repair your OS.

I honestly don't know. I will see if I can find anything out for you, or someone else give some input please?

EDIT- According to http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm I have no idea if this works, but go ahead and try it out.

How to make a recovery cd
1 Place disc in the computer.

2 Open My Computer, right-click the A(or whatever drive your CD is): drive and click Format.

3 In the Format window, check Create an MS-DOS startup disk.

4 Click Start

Then:
1 Boot from the Windows XP CD or Windows Recovery CD. If you're having difficulties booting from the CD see document CH000217 for additional help.
2 Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.
3 If prompted to select the installation of Windows press 1 and press enter.
4 If prompted for a password enter your administrator password.
5 At the C:\Windows> prompt type: cd system32\config
6 Once in this directory type: ren system system.bak
7 Once the file has been renamed type: cd \
8 At the C:\> prompt type: cd system~1
* If you get an "Access Denied" error, type exit and let the system reboot and try getting into this directory again by starting over at step number 7 after getting back to the prompt.
9 In the system~1 directory type: cd _resto~1
10 In the cd_resto~1 directory type dir
* If available this will list each of the Restore Point folders. They'll be named rpX, where X is a number. The highest number will be the latest restore point and the lowest the oldest restore. Pick the earliest restore point, for example, if you have RP1 through RP7 go into the RP1 directory.
11 Go into the RP directory you wish to restore, by typing: cd rpX
*where X is the number of the RP you saw in step 10.
12 In the RP directory type: cd snapshot
13 Finally type: Copy _registry_machine_system C:\Windows\system32\config\system
14 After the file has copied successfully type exit and let the computer reboot normally to see if this resolves you issue.

He can't boot into windows and he don't have a recovery cd so how is he gonna get into the recovery console?

If you have lost your recovery cd's then you need to contact the maker of the pc for replacement disks.
 
Installing the driver corrupted the system evidentely, which can and will happen. You can borrow someone XP install cd, boot to the recovery console and do a system restore, however its a little technical procedure and you'll have to follow it to the "T".
