intel i7 vs. amd phenom II

so salvage this and I have agreed to do a Phenom II vs i7 860 comparison. we'll be using PCmark, Cinebench, SuperPi and maybe 3dmark as our benchmarks and run our processors at the same speed. then max benchable speed for each benchmark. anyone else that wants to participate in this little competition is more than welcome to join just so long as you have the following:

intel or amd quad cpu (amd x4/phenom II/black editions) (intel C2Q/i5/i7)
2-4gb of RAM
windows 7 64-bit OS

these requirements should level the playing field out a little and give us less variables to interfere with the benchmarks.

gentlemen, start your computers. :good:

Super Pi isn't fair at all, don't be silly.

I'll be down, but I'll have to do it tonight, since I have to go out in an hour and twenty minutes. Intoxicated benching FTW!

But you didn't take things like GPUs or cooling into the equation, too...

Edit: also, 64 bit OS is a stupid restriction. Use 32 bit for AMD or you're a noob.

Well I should post all of my specs so everyone knows what i'm working with...

CPU: AMD Phenom ll X4 955 BE: stock at 3.2Ghz overclocked to 3.8Ghz by the multiplier. (200Mhz X 19)

Motherboard: ASUS M4A77TD

RAM: 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix 2x1gb Corsair xms3 DDR3 1333
Timings set at 9-9-9-24 at 667Mhz

GPU: XFX Radeon HD 4850

Here is a shot of cpu-z, gpu-z and AMD Overdrive with my system specs.

I'll start benchmarking when I get back from class.

Let the OP decide the parameters and please don't turn this into a flame war. We're not even a page in yet lol. Using words like stupid and noob only invites arguments and nonsense into the thread. :)

Why is that? Both CPUs have a 64 bit architecture. So running both on 64 bit is just as fair as running both on 32 bit.

Super Pi isn't a fair benchmark between Intel and AMD platforms since it's heavily, heavily biased towards Intel. Think of it like turning PhysX on in 3DMark Vantage, and then comparing your results to an ATi card.

It's just silly. AMD CPUs' IMCs have issues with 64 bit operating systems and high clock speeds, so restricting it to 64 bit use would put an unfair cap on the Phenom IIs' overclocks, and skew the results which are possible to attain.

They'd usually wall at or around 4GHz, depending on how good the IMC in question is, and if it's a C3 or not.

See above :p

i'll just tell you now that the i7 will win in most cases. a more fair comparison is non extreme i7 vs AMD thuban. i'm also on the process of testing my i7-870X to my AMD 1055T for cunching and power consumptions at the same clocks

if you like you can start your own competition and i'll participate in it with your rules. seeing as how both the owner of the phenom and i run 64-bit windows 7, neither of us have to install windows to run any of these benchmarks with equal conditions.

if you want to just troll then find somewhere else to do it.

I'd hardly say that pointing out a flaw in a testing methodology is trolling...

I think you maybe need to look up on the definition of trolling.

meti - You bring up a few resonable points

an0nym0us- continue on with the thread. Don't go back and forth taking shots at each other or it'll get closed up. Thanks

Alright here are the results that I got from the benchmarks.

PC Mark 05

Cinebench

I didn't get a whole lot of information from those so I uploaded my results from Performance Test 7.0

gonna go to dinner & a movie with the girlfriend. i'll do my benches on her machine when we get back... persian food and Iron Man 2, sounds like a good combo to me. =]
