Laptop crashed

My laptop crashed (http://www.computerforum.com/176946-will-new-op-work-backup-disc.html for more information) and basically I need a new hard drive. Staples said I need a Sata HD 2 and a half in. I believe. Anyone recommend anything for something that's going to be running Win7 and a lot of storage? It's my old laptop that my mom is going to use after it's restored and she's a real estate agent. She always has a lot of programs she uses for work.

I would recommend Western Digital Scorpio Black, but you said you need a lot of storage... I don't know how much you mean by "lot", but you might be better off getting a bigger for the price (but slower) Scorpio Blue.

The main difference between Blue and Black with regards to WD's laptop drives is the speed - blacks are 7.2krpm, blues are 5.2krpm. And blacks are usually smaller (in capacity, not physical size).

I haven't had much experience with other laptop hard drives so I can't really give too much advice on them, but Samsung and Seagate are both brands you can be pretty confident with.
 
In all honesty, I would not get a Western Digital laptop drive. I see them fail so much and so often at work. Any SATA laptop drive will work, so whatever is the best deal for your budget get it.
 
Right now I'm looking at Seagate's 500 GB drive with 7200 rpm and 16cashe. Seems to be very well balanced as far as specs are concerned. Has anyone had any problems with seagate?

btw AGAIN it's on sale for 79.99 (20 dollars off) good deal??

That drive is fine, but mind you that most laptop drives re 5400 RPM so they eat up less battery power. Then again if the laptop is old the battery is going to not perform as well as it did when it was first purchased.

I think that drive will be fine.
 
Alright thanks. Yeah because my laptop right now has a 500 GB HD at 5400 rpms and it works perfectly fine. So it should work fine for hers too.
 
Hey the order failed to go through with the seagate, but it's actually a good thing because it's not speed my mom is looking for--it's space. So now i'm looking at the seagate momentus 5400 and the samsung spinpoint m7e. Anyone have any pointers about the two manufactures? Anyone favor one over the other?

As for a HDD, I'd just grab any 5400RPM 2.5" drive, cheapest you can find with adequate storage. you still have not told us how much storage it needs to have though... is 320gb enough?

Just don't buy Western Digital as I see those fail all the time at work. I have three Samsung drives in my home computers, all work great. I also got a few Hitachi drives no problems there. I do have two seagates in my main PC. 1 failed but the warranty was awesome. Advanced RMA, no problem had a drive on my door step the next day or maybe it was the day after the next day, but either way very impressed with Seagate's warranty.
