There isn't really a way to make it take up less room, that I know of. I guess you could compress it, but I don't think you would want to.
 
Yes, you can store it in a compressed folder especially if you aren't frequently accessing it. You may not get good results though, it depends on what you are trying to compress. You could also offload everything to DVD or something but there's not much else you can do other than get bigger/more hard drives.
