I have an old Sony Vaio. It has the original pentium 4 processor. I had a 500 watt power supply in it and took that one out to put into another computer. I then installed a 300 watt power supply into the Sony. Now im getting a message saying the cpu is running hot. It did not do this with the 500 watt power supply. Do you think my problem is the power supply?

Dont really know, seems odd. Have you checked the CPU fan and heatsink for dust. Maybe check to see if the fan is even running, might have knocked the CPU fan connector off or loose.

What do you mean by a message? I've never seen Windows tell me that my CPU's running hot. I thought that the only way to tell if it was running hot was to monitor it with a temperature monitoring program.

My Mother's computer's (An ancient little celeron.) keyboard stopped working, so I just plugged it back in and prepared for the grueling boot up process. After the boot screen, the mobo told me that hardware monitor found an issue. After a flick through the BIOS, I found the CPU at a nice n' cool 81*!

Not sure if this is the message he's getting, but it is possible for the motherboard to detect temps and depending on your settings, do something about it (Emergency shut off, etc).
