Can't access partitioned hard drive

A few weeks ago a friend helped me partition a 160GB Western Digital hard drive into two sections, around 120GB for one and 40GB for the other. I already have stuff in the 120GB section, and now I want to put stuff into the 40GB section. When I connect the hard drive with my laptop, it displays three drives, I:, H:, and G:

For some reason it displays I: as having 160GB, and the other two near empty. And I also cannot find any files in I:. When I try to access H: it tells me it has not been formatted, and won't let me see the contents inside. My friend warned me that formatting it will cause me to lose all the stuff I put into the 120GB section.

So where exactly is all my stuff on it? It's not on G: for sure since that drive only displays 203mb, and I know I have around 80GB of stuff on it. And how do I access the 40GB section? My friend went on vacation so I can't ask him.

Thanks~

Use disk management to determine what you need to do with your drive, it's possible that its just not formatted yet after you parititioned it. Right click on "my computer" click on manage, then click on disk management of left. Find your 40 gb partition to see if a drive letter is assigned to it. Post an image of disk management back here if you need help.

Here is the disk management screen:

I don't really understand this window... I'm 100% sure I have ~80GB of stuff in the disc, yet it says it's 99% free space? And I'm also pretty sure he partitioned it into two sections, might not be exactly 120GB but somewhere close.

According to that image you have 2 hard drives.

1. 120 gb with 2 partitions of 40 gb and 71.75 gb with the 40 gb drive being your windows drive.

2. A 320 gb drive with 3 partitions of 137.7 gb, 160.19 gb, and 203 mb.

How many physical hard drives do you have in your system 2 or 3?

Yup 120GB is my laptop's hard drive.
Oh I guess the hard drive is 320 GB then... Haha sorry I didn't buy this hard drive so I got confused and thought it was 160 GB since it said that on the my computer screen. Is it supposed to only have around 300GB? Where did the other 20GB go?
And the problem still is that I can't access either of the 137.7 and 160.19 drives. I'm 100% sure I have stuff on the 160.19 section, and 137.7 is empty.

The 137 gb partition needs to be formatted and the 160gb is empty except for a small amount of data (.06gb or 60 mb).

When you format a drive you lose some space. Also there is a difference between the actual size of the drive and what the manufacturer says it is.

Ah ok I will just put stuff into the 160GB section for now, that won't affect the other questionable drive right?
Thanks!
