So i had a bunch of things on my external drive. None of which were very important mainly just music and movies and what not but point is. I had them all on there and when i went to plug it in again its telling me drive is unreadable all it shows is the ntfs partition. Is there a way to retrieve all my data? I tried running the check on it to repair any corruptions but that wont work. I ran a malwarebytes scan on it and it didnt even scan the files :( any ideas??

Yes, as long as the hard drive is still functioning correctly, it is possible to retrieve the data off of it, although parts of it will likely be fragmented. You'll need to use some sort of program like Recuva that can retrieve files from a crashed hard drive.

Did you buy this external drive or did you buy an internal drive and install it in an external enclosure?

Why would that matter? If you buy an external enclosure or the whole thing together it's still essentially the same thing.

And to the OP: Did you try Recuva?

I wasn't sure on an external drive if you could take the hard drive out and test it out of the enclosure.

Yeah, any external drive you buy is just a normal 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive in a pretty standard external enclosure. Some of the enclosures like the Western Digital MyBooks might have some special firmware, but the hard drives are still just normal hard drives. However if the drive is still detected fine then odds are that it's the hard drive rather than the enclosure causing any problems.
