Confused about VGA, DVI, HDMI

OK so here is the thing, today I purchased a used HD 4870 video card from Ebay and installed it and it works fine. Now, I purchased THIS monitor about 2 months ago and it came with the standard VGA plugin. Now, I heard that to get the best picture quality you need a DVI or HDMI cable. I noticed on the back of the video card there was a spot to plugin either HDMI DVI or VGA. I had to plug into the VGA port because thats all I have for my monitor. Now my question is this... in order to plugin to DVI will I need to purchase an entirely new monitor or is there a cable that plugs into the VGA from the monitor and then plugs into the DVI port on the video card? Sorry if it is a little confusing but I'm confused myself.
 
VGA is a standard analog signal. DVI and HDMI both work with digital signals and offer higher quality graphics to maximize the quality of your LCD. Using a DVI to VGA adapter with your monitor will not show any difference in video quality.

Adapters, so long as it is the same format (video, sound, data etc), there is probably an adapter for it :)
 
Hi, would THIS work for what I'm talking about? And in the specs it says it supports resolutions up to 1600x1200... my monitor is 1920 x 1080 will it work?

DVI is better than VGA. If you are using a VGA monitor, how will it take advantage of it? It can't is the answer. It is like if you have a HD dgital box on your TV, but a standard definition TV. It will be able to stream and show the picture on the screen, but it won't be HD quality.

They are there because if you have a HDMI or DVI monitor, THEN it will be able to take advantage of the better quality.

the adapter you posted will work, yes. It will plug into the DVI port, then your VGA cable will go into the adapter.
