What is a better Choice??

I am thinking (as far as i have got so far) about building a PC for my personal use.
My question, to start with anyway, is, Is it better to buy a dedicated builders case, or a preassembled case, such as Dell or Hp?

I am going for one that can run games, the internet, write dvds, and crunch numbers lightning fast.
I have found quite a few desktop computers for sale locally for under 100. If the cases are pretty good quality, then could the be upgraded with new motherboards, ram, hdds, video/audio cards and such??

build it yourself is the best option. What you mean by dedicated builders case?? You mean barebone case?

that depends

1) do you want the responsibility of repairing/servicing the machine if it breaks down

2) do you want to spend less on a machine, but potentially more on upkeep of said machine

if you answered no to the first one and no to the second, buy a prebuilt machine

if you answered yes to the first one and yes to the second, then build yourself, barring those questions, throw us more info our way...like say what is your budget?
 
ok, i meant a case that is empty. One that is made for build it yourselfers.

What i want is to build one that i never have to worry about things like "do i have enough ram?, Is my processor fast enough?, Whats in there anyway? <-- two IBM thinkpads have dies to that question. )

My budget is however much it cost. I do not have a "want for money" thanks to dad, grandad, and lucky business decisions. Id probably set the upper end of the budget at 10-15K though.

If you're asking about buying a prebuilt computer to upgrade with newer components... I don't think it works like that regarding the major components such as the Power Supply or Motherboard. My impression is that you may add cards (Sound Card, TV Tuner Card, etc), but usually not components. From reading posts on this forum my sense is that an HP or Dell computer may be built in a way that won't allow for their propietary components to be replaced with aftermarket components which would make it difficult/impossible to upgrade with parts.

I may be wrong about this though and I'm sure someone will let us know if I am.

You can add most parts. It depends on the computer. But if you add anything like a video card, you need a new PSU.
 
what i was asking to start with is weather or not I could buy an older computer and take all the componets out of it and replace them with new parts (power supply, motherboard, HDD, RAM, Wires, video/audio cards, network card, etc.)
