My gtx460 vantage thread

Picked up a non ''superclocked'' EVGA 1gb gtx460, it came today so on with the benchin results!

OK so I couldn't really use 3dmark 06 because it wasn't fair. In SM2 it was only averaging about 70% GPU usage so the results were skewed. Vantage however worked well.

I was able to overclock my card to a whopping 850 core clock, 1700 shaders, and 2000 memory on STOCK voltage. 875 started to artifact but I will try unlinking the shaders and only upping the core clock later.

Here's some vantage scores from a bunch of different cards I've had.

*note* you have to look at the GPU score only because almost none of these have the same CPU and/or clockspeed and of course PhysX.

These were all mine at one point, and they were all overclocked to pretty much max.

First the gtx460 OC'd of course-

5830 overclocked-

5770 overclocked (I was trying out PhysX with ATI card)

9800GX2 overclocked

4870 X2 overclocked-

8800gt's SLI overclocked-

Again ONLY LOOK AT THE GPU scores please.

I just want to to point out at this time to look at the GPU score difference in a 5770 VS the 5830 for those of you who think a 5830 is barely better than a 5770.

The only card I've had that has beaten the single gtx460 1gb is an overclocked 4870 X2 2gb card. Not bad on the gtx460 though for probably using 1/4 the electricity and heat.

EDIT- Yes temperatures. At 70% fan, it topped out at 64c with the 850 overclock. At stock clocks 60c max. Card idles at 40c with 70%, and 43c at 60% fan. The fan is farely loud. About 45% it starts being audible. 60% fan is OK, but 70% is what I would classify as very loud. I will most likely game with ~55-60% fan and it will barely see 60c most likely.

OK overvolt time for 900 core clock

Bumped voltage .087, 900 core 1800 shaders FTW!

ALMOST cracked 20k, probably could have ran it again and would have. Good enough to say my single gtx460 hits 20k vantage score. And of course, I could overclock the CPU more and probably hit 21-22k.

Oh yeah. It creams a 5770 and easily beats a 5830, so for the price it can't be beat right now.

Testing a 925 core overclock now. LOL

Found out the voltage cap on these is 1.087 (stock 1.000). NCspecV81 made a modified bios to go up to 1.212 and he's runing 1010mhz core on his I saw under water.

Just the .087 voltage bump and going to 900 core increased temps 10c. Max was 74c and 70% fan.

EDIT- 925 core starting to artifact with 06', but passed. But there's no way vantage will pass.

Wham bam 20k-

Not sure how the overall score only went up not even two hundred points when the cpu score is 4k higher.

Haha, nice...... Beating a 9800GX2 at only $230? This thing's beast. It beat a 5830 by a fair amount that costs a good 20 bucks more, and it beat a 9800GX2 that cost 600 bucks on release a couple years ago. Big thumbs-up! :good::good::good::good:

5830's did drop in price to $200-210 now. I'd venture a guess and say that a 5830 is right on par with a 768mb gtx460. So for the same price, I'd way rather have the smaller, more energy efficient, and Nvidia, card.

Agreed. I usually tend to lean towards Nvidia also. :)

Well you can see the massive amount of hardware I test, which what I posted is only the tip of the iceberg. And you can see which cards I end up keeping the longest. 'nuff said :P

Down the road, another 460 is SLI will definitely be happening. I've also contemplated going to the 1366 platform and eventually getting a 980x when the prices comes down the a reasonable level. Or maybe even a 970 then, I'm sure those are sweet too.

I'm hoping that Intel's still going to release a decent amount of low-end i7 hexa-cores before they stop developing the line. I still wanna see a 925 @ 2.66GHz. :D Probably not going to happen, though. :(

.
Here's what of pair of them will do, (OC'd & stock),

I'm really amazed by these little GPUs - 55+ FPC in Warhead with everything on max.

Not gonna break 30K in Mark 06 though - Only able to manage 27,470 so far.
Oh well, they ought to last me for a few years.

Yeah, you're always OC'ing and testing :P

970s overclock badly, and only £100 cheaper than 980x, which is uber-awesome overclocker.
460s in SLi should pwn the latest games and do very well in 3dmark, even if the SLi isn't beneficial in some games

Yup I love mine, the gtx460 is the new 8800gt, the best bang for the buck.

Yeah for some reason 06' doesn't scale these fermi GPU's well at all. SM2 only sees like 50% GPU usage so it's like only having one card anyway. SM3 scales slightly better, like 70% usage, which is the only reason the score is higher.

Nice scores:good:

Good to see the 9800gx2 still has fight left in it

Yeah the GX2 was my favorite card until the 460 came out.

Well this thread is 3 months old, at the time the 970 was JUST released so there wasn't much info on it.
