PSU Melted cables!

My brother was having some boot issues with his computer. Disk boot failure, or a missing file.

Anyway he unplugged his other HDD and then booted up. same message, but this time the powersupply cables started melting! The molex cable to his DVD drive to be precise. The PSU was a SHAW 860w. Yeah a POS.

So, time for a cheap-as-possible-but-still-being-good-quality replacement.

Well what did he buy and what is your price range. Can you link some typical Aussie sites as well?

Aww that's nothing. Cables melting is completely normal for power supplies. It gets kinda smelly after a while but all you have to do is open a window. :D

Cool, will look into those. Right now my bro is using an a-power 680w... which is really a 280w psu... i told him not to...

That is a junk power supply. I thought the most recent one I replaced was going to electrocute me.

Situation: Working on a Compaq S4020WM Desktop Computer. Specifications of the power supply are as follows:

Bestec Model: ATX-250-12Z 250 Watt

The power cord was plugged into my surge protector. I plugged the cord into the power supply and heard a very loud crackling sound. I pulled the cord out and could smell the component was fried.

Bestec also makes junk power supplies.

I've also seen a 250watt Bestec die in a Compaq. :) I think it was a similar model too. IMO HP is pretty much using the Compaq name for all their low-end crap. I think I saw a Compaq desktop for <$300 in the Staples flier once. Sempron desktop = DON'T BUY!!!!!
