Can't upgrade to N router, please help.

Just got off the phone with Linksys tech support after 2 hours trying to upgrade my router with no success.

My current router is a Linksys G router model: WRT54G2 V1 and it works fine hard wired to my deckstop (Acer Aspire AST180 with generic Marvell Yukon Chipset Ethernet Controller). When I installed the new router (Linksys N router model: WRT160N V3) the tech person said she could not get an IP address. We hard wired my laptop and it worked fine so we switched out the cable to the computer thinking maybe it was bad but still in would not work so she concluded that it is an issue with my computer or my Ethernet care.

I don't have the funds to buy another card. Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you in advance for any help. Please note: I am a novice with computers so please make any suggestion in layman detail.
 
Did the desktop get internet before through the cable? You may want to try updating the ethernet driver then. Or uninstall it through device manager and reboot and let windows reinstall the driver.
 
Yes it worked fine through the cable. I did search for a more updated driver but my driver is the most up to date version. I am afraid to uninstall the driver and reinstall because I have to use this computer for work. Is there any risk if I do this that I might make matter worse. Thank you.

PS. I have been checking all day for messages and I just saw yours at after 11 p.m. It looks like you entered it this morning.
 
Do you get email confirmations when someone replys to a thread you posted in? If not, you need to change your default notification settings in the user CP up top left or you have to do it every time you reply or make a thread.

And no, it won't make the matter worse to uninstall and then reboot.

If you were on the same page just hitting F5, that doesn't always work, you have to leave it, and then renavigate to it.
