The biggest question here is....which 4800 series card are you talking about??? It seems you are saying that you already have a 4800 now, so you are wondering whether to get another and run Xfire, or just get a 5770.
But again, this depends on which 4800 you have.
Also, a 5770 will pretty much play any game a 1680x1050, so I'm guessing you only have like a 4850 since you want to upgrade? If you have a 4870 or 4890, going Xfire will easily outperform a 5770 but then again you are going to use 3 times the power doing it and you better have a good PSU.

What? Umm, no. The 5770 is easily stronger than a 4850. Unless you meant Xfired 4850's > 5770.
A single 5770 can handle just about anything at 1680x1050. I would just go with the 5770 for now, with a future intention of Xfiring two of those because thats stronger than a 5850 then.

^^^ although in games, framerates are simliar (with each card being a single, see [old] reference chart below)
Xfired 5770 is about as strong as a 5870, I'd say.
It's not being utilised properly yet, but DX11 will have it's time, and then you'll need at least a 5*** series card.

Yeah thats probably when the 5770 first came out and had immature drivers, the 5770 is closer to 4870 performance which is a good bit stronger than a 4850.
You do realize, that if you have a motherboard that isn't capable of crossfire you are going buying another 4850 for no reason? And if you have a crappy power supply you could pop it and take the motherboard and perhaps other components with it?
Now, if you board does do Xfire, than OK...and maybe you have a good enough power supply.....but I'm just making a point, we don't know nor do we know how much you know what you are doing. But just to say don't worry about my mobo or PSU scares us.

it is always best to try and get a single gpu if possible (learned from experience). the hd 5770 is a great card and the drivers have come a very long way. it has dx11, eyefinity support, and has a great power consumption rating. plus that way when you decide to upgrade down the raod again, you won't be stuck trying to sell two cards, you can just sell one or crossfire it
