How do I know?

I have a HP laptop that onlt has 2GB RAM. I want to upgrade to 4GB but i'm not sure if my laptop can actually handle that much memory, would that be a waste? Should I just go up to 3GB. I have a HP Pavilion Dv600 with AMD turion 64X2 running vista. It is an old laptop, about 3y/o. If I can upgrade, how do I know I am buying the right thing? Thanks for any help I can get!

Is your operating system 32 or 64 bit? That will determine whether or not your computer can handle 4gb or ram.

For choosing the right kind of ram, download this scanner:
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

It will tell you how many slots for ram you have, what size and type to get. If you just post what the scan says we can help you find the right ram for your laptop.

what I got

1GBDDR PC2-5300 1GBDDR PC2-5300
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Q: Will my system recognize the maximum upgrade?

A: Possibly

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and can I mix speeds?

A: DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-5300 speeds.

Q: How much memory can my computer handle?

A: 2048MB.

Adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.

Q: Do I have to install matching pairs?

A: No.

No, you can install modules one at a time, and you can mix different densities of modules in your computer. But if your computer supports dual-channel memory configurations, you should install in identical pairs (preferably in kits) for optimal performance.

Q: Does my computer support dual-channel memory?

A: No.

Your system does not support dual channel.

Q: Does my computer support ECC memory?

A: No.

Your system does not support ECC. Because ECC and non-ECC modules should not be mixed within a system, install the same type of modules that are already in your system.

Unfortunately, It looks to me that your laptop already has the maximum ram that is allowed for your system. Sorry we couldn't help out more. :(

Funny how HP is trying to sell me 2GB to replace one of the 1GB chips..They know it won't do any good, they just want my $$$

The Turion processor supports 4GB. You may need a BIOS update to support more than 2GB though, the early DV6000 models had this artificial 2GB limit. There are a lot of dv6000 models though so you'll need to be more specific if you want the update.

On a semi-related note, HP's website is still the biggest pile of crap for finding support.
