Windows 7 memory error

Hello everyone,

I have a strange problem that I have not been able to solve myself.

I am not sure how to post pictures in here otherwise I would.

But here is what is happening.
I have 4 gigs of memory in my home build pc.

Windows shows a total RAM of 3,3 gig
In task manage that is.
It says 1,3 is cached.
and about 1,2 gig available.

HOWEVER, where it says free it goes down to 25 megabytes, then frees up a bit and then down again. It is really annoying when playing games and stuff.

I look for memory hogs and there is nothing using anything that I see.

I ran all the malware bytes, virus scan and so on.
I got almost nothing on my task bar and I do not have a memory
program.

It is weird and I am puzzled, please if you have any suggestions I would be grateful.

Thanks a lot,
Michael

First of all, if you have the 32 bit (x86) version of 7, you can't access more than about 3.5 GB. You have to get x64 to be able to address all of it. All your programs will work just fine in x64, don't worry :P). Now, the sudden increase of memory usage you see is because Windows 7 caches a lot of OS and program stuff to make everything faster-a great idea, and it works well, as it will give RAM to any program as needed. My computer has 2.5 GB RAM and I have a new seldom used installation of 7, and it only uses 768 MB at idle, and up to 1.8 GB at it's worst during some file management.
What games are you running?

I just play wizard101 but even if I just copy files back and forth which I do a lot, it is way low all the time.

I could upgrade to 8 gig and throw on a 64 bit version, that might be fun.
It has been quite a while since I bought Windows 7 and installed it. I am
apparently in some kind of deadly shock, because I love Windows 7 and have
pretty much hated MS for most of my life.

My judgment is that they panicked with Vista AND a terrible economy and hired
real programmers to save their butts....LOL Probably even a good Linux crew underground.

Thanks a lot,
Michael

You sure you checked it out in Task Manager? I don't have this problem, and it seems like I have the same setup as you only I have the x64 version.

I've got the same view as you do about 7. Hated Windows, had to use XP, never touched Vista. Yep, this time maybe Steve Ballmer stopped throwing chairs just enough so that the programmers could recover from their concussions. :D

Mine goes down to 1 Mb free, but I still have 1359MB available.
In Resource Monitor, Standby + Free = Available, and Windows 7 takes and manages all available physical memory in readiness for when its needed.

A low free figure does not mean that's all that's left to work with.
